Women's Swimming Takes Third at TP December Invite

The Colgate women's swim team earned 704.5 points to take third at the Total Performance December Invite at Kenyon College.

Penn came away with the team victory with 1,433 points during the three-day invitational. Kenyon was second with 1,314 total points, followed by Colgate.

On the last day of competition, the Raiders had seven top-10 finishers. The highlight of the night and the entire invitational for Colgate came from sophomore Lia Kunnapas (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) as she finished second in the championship final of the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:03.41. She was followed by rookie Megan Jex (Carmel, Ind.) who ended up fifth at 2:06.12.

Senior captain Caren Guyett (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) contributed to the team score with a fifth-place swim in the 500-yard free at 5:01.72. Junior Erica Derlath (Garden City, N.Y.) took seventh in the same event with a time of 5:04.26. Sophomore Emma Santoro (Fall River, Mass.) chipped in with a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:22.23.

Guyett also swam to a top-five finish in the 100-yard free with a time of 52.41 seconds to end up fifth, while Santoro wasn't far behind and collected sixth place with a mark of 52.74 seconds.

On Friday, Colgate earned six top-10 finishes in five events. Santoro started the day for the Raiders with a seventh-place swim in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.17. The highlight of the second day for Colgate came in the 100-yard backstroke as Kunnapas had the top finish of the day with a third-place time of 57.31 seconds.

In the 400-yard individual medley, Colgate had two top-10 finishers. Derlath took fifth place with a mark of 4:29.50, while Guyett recorded a ninth-place finish with a time of 4:35.61. Those two with Santoro and rookie Claire Hunter (Rye, N.Y.) also competed in the 400-yard individual medley and finished fourth with a time of 3:54.26.

On the first day, Guyett and Derlath were both top-10 finishers in the 1650-yard free. Guyett ended up fifth with a swim at 17:08.25, while Derlath took home an eighth-place finish with a time of 17:19.60. Hunter and Santoro once again joined Derlath and Guyett for a relay. This time it was the 800-yard free relay and the fourth scored another fourth-place mark at 7:33.48.

Colgate will be off for more than a month as the next meet comes at Cornell on Jan. 15 at 11 a.m.
