HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/23/10) –
The Colgate women's swimming and diving team earned nine event victories by six different athletes, but it wasn't enough as Buffalo spoiled the Raiders season opener at Lineberry Natatorium with a 152.5-144.5 win.

The first win for Colgate came in the third swimming event, which was the 1000-yard freestyle and junior Erica Derlath (Garden City, N.J.) earned her first win of the season with a time of 10:25.70. She finished a full four seconds ahead of Jordan Deren of Buffalo. Senior Caren Guyett (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) followed with her first of two wins on the day in the 200-year freestyle with a time of 1:55.15.

Sophomore Lia Kunnapas (Hasbrouck Heighs, N.J.) jumped into the pool and won her first individual event of the season. She swam in the 100-yard backstroke and finished at 57.65. Classmate Ryan Marynowski (White Plains, N.Y.) started her year off well with a win in the 200-yard fly, beating out Buffalo's Hilary Woldt by three seconds with a time of 2:08.27.

Kunnapas was back at it again, becoming the first double winner for the Raiders at the meet and completing the sweep in both backstroke events by taking the 200-yard backstroke at 2:04.72. Guyett was the second to post repeat victories with a win in the other distance freestyle event, which was the 500-yard freestyle. She kicked it in high gear during the last leg to pull a 28.85 and won with a time of 5:06.16.

Senior Erin McGraw (Penfield, N.Y.) came through in the 100-yard fly with a time of 56.95 to win her first event of the season.

Sophomore Kim Pilka (Great Falls, Va.) continues to impress on the board after a stellar first season. She swept both diving events on the afternoon. She finished with a score of 259.11 in the 1-meter dive, while taking first in the 3-meter dive later on in the meet at 243.69.

Unfortunately, the meet seemed to come down to the relays and Colgate failed to earn a victory in the two events. Buffalo left Hamilton with a 152.5-144.5 victory on Saturday.

Colgate will be on the pool deck on Nov. 6 as the Raiders host Boston College at 1 p.m. at Lineberry Natatorium. Also a reminder to all alumni, friends and family members, Colgate swimming will be hosting a reunion following the meet.
