WASHINGTON, D.C. (10/22/10) – The Colgate women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-19) decision to American on Friday night in Patriot League action.
Colgate (11-11, 4-4 PL) only managed 22 kills in the three sets with senior captain
Casey Ritt (Colorado Springs, Colo.) posting a team-high six, while junior
Kaylee Dougherty (Landisville, Pa.) and rookie
Lindsay Young (Tampa, Fla.) had five apiece. Senior captain
Devon Applegate (Davidson, N.C.) picked up a team-high 11 digs.
American (21-2, 8-0 PL) showed why it is on a 12-match winning streak and undefeated in conference play. Magdalena Tekiel led the way with 11 kills, while Angelina Waterman posted nine of her own. Waterman also picked up eight digs on the night. Deborah Frantz was the leader in that category with 17 digs and Krysta Cicala and Alexandra Hammer had 21 and 22 assists, respectively.
The Eagles led right off the start in the opening set with an early 10-6 lead. Colgate got kills from senior captain
Logan Keala (Kaneohe, Hawaii) and two from Young to start the match, but American countered with three points from Waterman. The 10-6 margin was as close as Colgate got as American built the lead up to 18-9 at one point and earned the 25-14 win in the first set.
Colgate hung around in the second set and got off to a good start, leading by as much as three at 7-4. The Raiders were aided by multiple Eagle attack errors, but Young and junior
Maureen Colligan (Odessa, Fla.) contributed a couple of points with kills. Colgate held onto the lead until back-to-back Waterman kills gave American a 14-13 lead. From there it was all Eagles with a 9-3 run to take the second set, 25-17.
The Raiders tried to recover and put up a fight in the third set after being down early. Colgate didn't let the lead balloon above three and got to within one three times in the middle of the match, but couldn't get that one point to tie it. The Eagles closed out the match with a 25-19 win in the final set. Ritt had four kills in the set, while Dougherty had three.
The Raiders will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at Navy for a 3 p.m. start.
