HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/16/10)
– The men's soccer team secured its seventh win of the season when it defeated Lafayette 2-0 on Saturday night. The Raiders (7-3-3) are now 4-0 in Patriot League, having now shutout out their fourth league opponent in a row.

Colgate started the match playing a very offensive game as they created one opportunity after another in front of Lafayette's goal, forcing the Leopards to play a very defensive half of soccer. Despite outshooting its opponents 6-3 in the first 45 minutes, the team was unable to get past the Lafayette keeper, closing the first half tied at 0-0.

In the second half it was clear that the Raiders were on a mission as they continued to put pressure on the Leopards' defense. Colgate finally found success in the 47th minute when Nick Arpey (Iowa City, Iowa) beat his defender on the left side of the field, dribbled the ball down the end line and then passed it to Steven Miller (Ivyland, Pa.) who shot it past the goalkeeper to give the Raiders the 1-0 lead.

The Raiders found the back of the net again in the 75th minute when George McFarland (Haverford, Pa.) crossed the ball into the box and found Matt Schuber (Webster, N.Y.) who volleyed the ball into the top right corner of the goal to give the Raiders the 2-0 win. Colgate outshot Lafayette 16-8.

“This was a very important win for our group and I feel we played our most complete and consistent game of the season,” stated head coach Erik Ronning. “However, we still have a lot of work to do in order to get where we want to be.”

Colgate will travel to College Park, Md. next for a matchup against No. 4 Maryland on Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 7.30 p.m.
