HAMILTON, N.Y. (3/7/09) – Meghan Lawler (Liverpool, N.Y.) posted a seven-point performance to pace Colgate to a convincing 18-6 victory over visiting American, Saturday afternoon in a Patriot League women's lacrosse clash at Tyler's Field.
The Raiders, who improved to 3-2 overall, never trailed in the game. Colgate netted the first five goals of the contest and never were threatened the rest of the way. American fell to 1-4 on the campaign.
Lawler's seven points came on five goals and two assists in the win, while Colleen Bubnack (Syracuse, N.Y.) tallied a five-point performance with two goals and three assists. Both Courtney Miller (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and Kate Bergstrom (San Francisco, Calif.) notched three goals against the Eagles.
Colgate took the lead for good 1:13 into the game as Miller connected for her first of three scores from Lawler. The lead increased gradually during the next nine minutes as Lawler netted two of the next three Raider goals at 25:16 and 20:50 respectiely and at 19:05, Miller connected for her first of the afternoon to give Colgate a comfortable 5-0 lead.
After American got on the board, the Raiders answered with back-to- back scores from Brie Moran (Little Silver, N.J.) and Lawler at 13:01 and 7:04 respectively. Following two goals from the Eagles, Miller closed Colgate's scoring in the opening half at 3:25. The Raiders raced into intermission with an 8-3 advantage.
Holding a 9-4 lead in the second half, Colgate put the game on ice with four consecutive goals within a seven minute span to stretch the lead to 13-4 with 15:32 left. The Raiders pushed the lead into double digits for the first time at 9:17 as Bergstrom netted back-to-back goals 1:51 apart.
Greer Goebels (Coronado, Calif.) notched her first collegiate goal with 8:16 left in the second half, while Kailey Krause (Chittenango, N.Y.) assisted on Colgate's last goal. It was her first collegiate point.
The Raiders outshot American 41-19. Sara Drexler (Pottstown, Pa.) made six saves before freshman Christina Roa (Potomac, Md.) closed the game's final 21:16 with one stop.
Colgate returns to action Tuesday evening as it hosts in state rival Albany. Game time is set for a 5 p.m. start at Tyler's Field.
