HAMILTON, N.Y. (3/4/09) – After playing three consecutive games on the road, the Colgate women's lacrosse team returns home and opens Patriot League play against American, Saturday afternoon at Tyler's Field. Game time is set for a noon start.
The Raiders, 2-2 overall, will attempt to end a two-game winless skid which saw them drop decisions to 16th-ranked Cornell (10-7) and to Penn State (16-6).
Sophomore Colleen Bubnack (Syracuse, N.Y.) is off to a strong start offensively with seven goals and 12 points in her first four games. Ashley Didio (Syracuse, N.Y.), Brie Moran (Little Silver, N.J.), and Meghan Lawler (Liverpool, N.Y.) are tied for second among Raiders' scorers with seven goals and nine points. Freshman Courtney Miller (Chappaqua, N.Y.) is right behind them with five goals and eight points. Sara Drexler (Pottstown, Pa.) is 2-2 on the year with an 8.94 goals against average in net for Colgate.
American is 1-3 on the young season. The Eagles' lone victory was a 12-6 cross-town decision over George Washington. American is coming off an 8-7 loss to Old Dominion. Gina Ibello (6-1-7), Amanda Makoid (6-0-6), and Leslie Fischer (4-1-5) are the top scorers.
This will mark the 12th meeting between the two schools with Colgate holding a 7-4 advantage. After the Raiders fell to the Eagles in the regular-season, they rebounded and beat American 13-8 in the finals of the 2008 Patriot League Tournament.
The contest with the Eagles will also be a “Friends of Jaclyn” game. The Raiders and American will be wearing special shooting shirts, donated by Brine Lacrosse, for warm up. The Foundation was set up in honor of Jaclyn Amanda Murphy, which serves a primary goal of helping to improve the quality of life for children suffering from pediatric brain tumors. Murphy was diagnosed with a medullablastoma, a malignant brain tumor, in March 2004. The program will be donating $25 per shirt worn on Saturday. Money donations will be accepted at the door.
“We are excited to be honoring the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation at our game this Saturday,” said Colgate head coach Heather Bliss. “It is a great foundation that has set up amazing connections with sports teams and young children. We are currently on a waiting list to adopt a child and are excited to be able to support the foundation through this game.”
