Field Hockey Hosts Season Opener

Raiders welcome the Chargers for home opener

HAMILTON – The field hockey program will embark on the 2026 season with its home opener, featuring the New Haven Chargers on Aug. 28 at 6 p.m. on Tyler's Field.

"I'm incredibly excited going into my first season at Colgate," said head coach Gareth Terrett. "Since arriving, I've been really impressed by the way the players have embraced change, the intensity they have brought to training, and their willingness to learn and improve. There is a real sense of excitement around the group, and I'm looking forward to seeing all the work we have done translate into competitive games.

"We know we have a challenging schedule and the Patriot League is extremely competitive. We have a lot of respect for the teams we will face, but our focus is very much on ourselves and continuing to raise our standards. We have a good mix of experienced players and an exciting group of new ones, and I believe we have the talent to compete with anyone on our schedule.

"Our goal is to get better every week, play an exciting and aggressive style of field hockey, and put ourselves in a position to compete for a place in the Patriot League Tournament. If we continue to develop and play with confidence, I think this team has the potential to surprise some people this season."

This will be the fourth consecutive year the Raiders have opened their season on Tyler's Field and the first time they open against the Chargers.

RETURNING TALENT
Colgate returns a lot of talent, including several rising seniors, to lead the team into a new era under new head coach Terrett.

Morgan Willis and Lauren Widdowson return as a dangerous duo on the attack. Willis led the Raiders with 10 goals and two game-winners last season. She also tied for fourth in the Patriot League in both categories. Willis added an assist to finish with 21 points while taking 32 shots.

Widdowson scored two goals and led the team with five assists to finish with nine points, including a game-winner.

Senior defender Annie Lake returns to the back line for the Raiders. Lake totaled three defensive saves and two assists to finish with two points.

NEWCOMERS
The Raiders have welcomed six first-years to the squad, including two forwards, two midfielders, a defender and a goalkeeper.

Incoming first-year Georgia Lochhead joins the program as a legacy, following her sister, Anna Lochhead, who graduated in 2026.

The Raiders will travel to Lock Haven on Sept. 11 for their first road scrimmage before returning home for back-to-back games against Lafayette (Sept. 18) and Rutgers (Sept. 20). Colgate will face Patriot League foe Lehigh on the road on Sept. 26.
