HAMILTON – The Colgate Raiders honored their 13 seniors at Andy Kerr Stadium Friday night while topping Lehigh, 9-7, to win their fourth consecutive Patriot League game.
Casey Quinson and Hunter Drouin had the hot hands, as the two combined for five goals—over half of Colgate's total—and each tacked on one assist.
Colgate's defense was the star of the show, holding the Mountain Hawks to seven goals. The total team effort featured Lehigh turning the ball over 19 times and the Raiders' goalkeeper, Andrew Lehrman, making 13 saves, marking his 10th game with 10 or more saves.
In a high-stakes game, Lehigh outshot Colgate, 45-38, but Colgate's accuracy was better, as the Raiders posted a 57.8 shot-on-goal percentage compared to the Mountain Hawks' 44.4 shot-on-goal mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Play opened slowly in the first quarter, as seven total shots were taken from both sides, but neither team could tally the first goal. Lehigh was charged with a holding penalty that allowed the Raiders to capitalize on their first man-up opportunity, with Drouin finding the back of the net off Ryan Favaro's assist.
Shortly after, Sam Erickson extended the lead with a shovel-in goal, as Drouin added another goal, securing a 3-0 lead by the end of the quarter and leaving Lehigh scoreless after the first 15 minutes of play.
Colgate maintained control during the second quarter, starting with a goal from Quinson. Lehigh finally got on the board with a man-down goal to trail, 4-1. Carrying momentum, the Mountain Hawks were able to get goal number two five minutes later.
However, Colgate's Emmet Crotty extended its lead with a goal, and Ryan Bilello capped the quarter with a last-second score, assisted by Nick Lancaster, securing a 6-2 lead heading into the half.
Lehigh initiated the third quarter with a quick offensive surge, as the Mountain Hawks went on a 3-0 run to get the game within a possession, trailing, 6-5. Colgate responded, capitalizing on its man-up opportunity when Quinson scored, assisted by Favaro.
Lehigh had the answer, scoring to get the game back within one, but Quinson struck again, this time with an assist from Drouin, helping Colgate maintain a two-goal buffer, 8–6, heading into the final quarter.
Favaro scored Colgate's only goal in the fourth quarter. Lehigh responded with a man-up goal, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit. In a low-scoring fourth quarter, defense was key in the game. Lehrman made three critical saves and allowed only one goal, helping the Raiders secure the 9-7 win over the Mountain Hawks.
