WORCESTER, Mass. – Nine different Raiders found the back of the net, but Holy Cross scored three goals in the fourth quarter to defeat Colgate 11-10 Saturday afternoon at Kuzniewski Field.
Casey Quinson netted two goals, leading Colgate's scoring depth, while Freddy Fowler posted three assists and a goal for a total of four points. Andrew Lehrman recorded seven saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Colgate used a three-goal run in the second quarter to build a 7-6 halftime lead. The teams traded two tallies apiece in the third quarter, with Quinn Spillett's rebound putback late in the frame keeping the Raiders in front 9-8 heading into the final stanza.
Holy Cross opened the fourth with three unanswered goals, including a man-up opportunity, to establish its first lead of the second half, 11-9, with 6:09 remaining. Colgate forced heavy pressure down the stretch, but Quinson's second goal of the game with 3:49 left capped the scoring.
The Raiders dip to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in the Patriot League after the loss, while the Crusaders improve to 4-3, 1-1 with the win.
Colgate held a 19-18 advantage in shots on goal and went 2-for-2 on extra-man opportunities. Holy Cross scooped up 29 ground balls to Colgate's 26 as the teams combined for 58 turnovers.
John Carrabine opened the scoring six seconds into the game, but Holy Cross staged a 3-0 surge to take its first lead. Nick Lancaster ripped a deep shot high into the netting at 3:51 to make it a one-goal deficit, 3-2, after the opening term.
After trading goals early in the second quarter, Colgate's best rally of the game came when Fowler assisted on back-to-back goals for Patty Eldredge and Emmet Crotty to tie the game, 6-6. Quinson rifled home a man-up goal with 1:30 left to give Colgate a 7-6 lead at the half.
The Raiders maintained their one-goal lead after third-quarter goals from Hunter Drouin and Spillett brought the score to 9-8 entering the fourth quarter. Holy Cross had the final run, outscoring Colgate 3-1 in the final frame to snap the Raiders' five-game head-to-head winning streak.
