Raiders Fall in Battle with #14 Virginia

Colgate rallies multiple times but comes up short in 19–14 loss

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Colgate fell to No. 14 Virginia on the road in the Cavaliers' season opener. The game featured four lead changes and eight ties before the Raiders suffered a 19–14 loss.

Despite scoring five man-up goals—a season high—Colgate committed 26 turnovers, five of which led to Virginia goals.

The Raiders had five different goal scorers, led by Casey Quinson with four goals. The game included 35 faceoffs, with Colgate winning 20. Junior Kyle Rummel led the faceoff effort, posting an 11–18 performance.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Colgate fired off two early shots, and the energy was matched by Virginia. Andrew Lehrman came up with an early save to keep the game scoreless, but the Cavaliers scored the first goal just under the 12-minute mark.

Ryan Favaro scored Colgate's first goal on a solo effort. Virginia responded with two assisted goals to take a 3–1 advantage before Andrew Kiefer collected a loose ball and ripped a shot. Hunter Drouin followed with a valiant diving effort to knot the game at 3–3.

Virginia closed out the first quarter with a pair of goals to take a 5–3 lead.

Colgate settled into the second quarter, outscoring Virginia 5–4. Early Cavaliers penalties allowed the Raiders to capitalize on a 3–1 run, highlighted by man-up goals from Favaro and Quinson.

The roles then reversed, as Virginia produced a 3–1 run of its own. Fowler's late-quarter goal kept Colgate within striking distance heading into halftime, trailing 9–8.

Using momentum out of the break, Colgate took its first lead of the game, 10–9, as Kiefer scored his second goal of the day and Quinson followed with a man-up goal.

Virginia responded with two goals over a four-and-a-half-minute span, capitalizing on a Raider penalty. Undeterred, Colgate answered with two goals in a 20-second span to regain a 12–11 advantage.

The lead was short-lived, as the Cavaliers surged with a decisive 4–0 run to take a 15–12 lead entering the final quarter.

The fourth quarter saw both teams trade goals, matching each other's energy, until Virginia pulled away in the final 1:30. The Cavaliers sealed the game with two goals to secure a 19–14 victory.

Colgate falls to 0–6 in the overall series against Virginia.
The team totaled a season-high 20 faceoffs won during the game.
John Carrabine recorded a season-high of 10 ground balls.
Sophomore goalkeeper Andrefw Lehrman faced 55 shots, making 13 saves.
