HAMILTON - Emma Pais scored two goals to propel the Raiders to their first win of the season over No. 14 Boston University at Class of 65 Arena on Friday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Colgate's defense was tested early but remained resilient, particularly with Emma Beauchamp blocking a shot from Boston's Maeve Carey. Despite a two-minute penalty against Taylor Senecal, Colgate's penalty kill unit successfully held Boston scoreless during the power play.
Boston managed to break through with a goal by Lexie Bertelsen at the 12:20 mark, putting the visiting team ahead. However, Colgate responded with persistent offensive pressure, generating multiple shot attempts. In the final minute of the period, Emma Pais found the back of the net with an equalizer, assisted by Alexia Aubin, leveling the score at 1-1 as the period concluded.
The second period commenced with Colgate maintaining pressure on Boston, as evidenced by repeated shot attempts from Avery Pickering and Ava Wood, though neither found the back of the net. The momentum shifted when Colgate capitalized on a power-play opportunity. With Boston down a player due to Lilli Welcke's hooking penalty, Pais scored at 8:20, assisted by Elyssa Biederman, pushing Colgate ahead 2-1.
Colgate continued to assert control, with Farah Walker making crucial saves against attempts by the opposition. Despite a late power play for Boston, Colgate's defense held strong, preventing any shift in the score. The period closed with Colgate leading 2-1, maintaining momentum heading into the final frame.
The third period began with Colgate maintaining control, as Sara Stewart won multiple faceoffs against Lilli Welcke, setting a strong tone for the period. Despite a penalty on Sydney Sawyer, the team effectively killed the ensuing power play from Boston, with Casey Borgiel and Taylor Senecal blocking shots to keep Boston from capitalizing.
Midway through the frame, Colgate's defense continued to stifle Boston, with Walker making key saves. The team gained momentum through a power play opportunity but couldn't convert despite consistent pressure on Boston's netminder, Mari Pietersen.
As the period drew to a close, Boston pulled their goalie for an extra attacker, but Colgate capitalized on the open net. Ava Wood, assisted by Alexia Aubin, scored an empty-net goal with 42 seconds remaining, sealing the game. Colgate finished the period leading 3-1, closing out the game with a decisive win.
