Raiders Rout Lakers, 5-1

Grace Schmelzinger and Ahria Dhillon score twice in victory

HAMILTON —  Colgate had two players score two goals in a 5-1 win over Mercyhurst Sunday afternoon at Tyler's field.

I'm really happy to see our team's quick turnaround after yesterday's game. It's great getting on the board and having multiple goal-scorers."  said head coach April Cornell-DeAngelis.

"The most important takeaway is the execution of our passing game and stepping for intercepts. We have an important week of preparation for an intense game against Cornell."

Grace Schmelzinger and Alli Troth found the back of the cage twice, marking the first career multi-goal game for both players. Ahria Dhillon also tallied three points with a goal and an assist.

Schmelzinger put the Raiders ahead 1-0 just under seven minutes into the first. Lauren Widdowson dribbled into the circle before playing a short pass to Schemelzinger, who fired it home.

Dhillon doubled Colgate's advantage with her first of the season, firing one in from the right side with 13 seconds remaining in the first.

In the second, Troth made it 3-0 Raiders. Following a corner, Dhillon took a shot that the sophomore deflected in. Schmelzinger notched her second of the contest with 9:32 left in the third when she found a loose ball in the circle and buried it.

Troth then put in her second to make it 5-0. Katie Convey sent the ball across the circle, and Troth tapped it in.

Mercyhurst got on the board in the third with a goal from Lola Williams with four and a half minutes remaining.

The Raiders also had two other corners, the first coming with 11:11 left in the first, from which Alice Walton fired a shot that got blocked. With just over two minutes left in the third, Dhillon put a shot wide following a corner. In the fourth, Colgate had another chance to add to its lead when Schemelzinger ripped one that got stopped on a defensive save.

Claire van Kempen picked up her second win of the season in goal.
