Colgate Falls to South Carolina in Durham

Raiders Drop 3-0 Contest at Duke

DURHAM, N.C. – Colgate could never get going in a 3-0 loss to South Carolina on Saturday, dropping to 0-2 on the weekend inside Duke's Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Frances Torres tallied nine kills to lead the Raiders, who hit .096 in the contest. Sydney Jones finished with 14 assists and 6 digs, while Abby Shadwick (6) and Tiana Owens (5) combined for 11 kills for the afternoon. South Carolina was strong at the net, posting a .329 hitting clip.

Coach Baker's Comments
"This was an uncharacteristic match from us today. We were very streaky in each set and South Carolina was not. Their consistency in all areas of their game beat us. These matches are testing us and exposing us in the best way possible. Our highs are very high, but our lows need to come up."

S1 | South Carolina 25, Colgate 20
Colgate was in an early 8-2 hole before climbing back with a 6-1 burst capped by a kill from Bayless to force a South Carolina timeout with the score 11-10. The Gamecocks took control with five unanswered points to stretch the lead it did not relinquish. Shadwick and Owens had kills down the stretch but it wasn't enough in the 25-20 decision.

S2 | South Carolina 25, Colgate 18
South Carolina used a pair of 4-0 runs around a kill from Owens to push its early lead to 12-5. The Raiders, who trailed for most of the frame, closed within 21-15 after kills from Lal Akin and Shadwick. A Gamecocks attack error cut the margin to 22-18, but South Carolina scored the final three points to build a 2-0 set lead, 25-18.

S3 | South Carolina 25, Colgate 13
The Gamecocks scored the first six points of the third frame and carried their momentum to a decisive victory. Colgate got on the board with a kill by Torres but South Carolina opened its lead to 18-7 with a 5-0 surge. Kills from Owens and Libby Overmyer gave Colgate its final points of the afternoon but the Raiders fell short in the final set, 25-13.
