GENEVA, N.Y. — A hot start helped propel the No. 20 Colgate Men's Lacrosse team to a 16-11 road victory over Hobart Sunday afternoon at Boswell Field.
"We worked our tails off this week. We challenged our guys to be intentional and disciplined with our physicality, and it really showed today. Hobart is a tough, scrappy squad that will not give up, and I have great respect for what Coach Raymond has built over there. They've had our number, and it feels good to get this win," said head coach
Matt Karweck.
"I told the guys in the locker room, the real reason our non-scout team execution was as good as they were today, was because of the dedication of our scout team. We have the best, most dedicated group who bring the heat. It's an incredible team, an incredible staff, and I'm blessed to get to be around them every day."
Rory Connor led the Raiders with six points, logging three goals and three assists.
Jack Turner had five points, notching four goals and a helper. Additionally,
Hunter Drouin and
Michael Minicus recorded hat tricks.
Goalie
Matt LaCombe made 14 saves to pick up the victory. He stopped five shots in the second quarter, including some big saves to halt a Statesmen run.
Max Yates caused two turnovers and picked up seven ground balls on the defensive side.
Colgate held a 6-1 advantage at the end of the first after scoring three times in the opening 4:10, with two from Turner and one from
Rory Connor. The Raiders ended the quarter with another 3-0 run.
Rory Connor scored again with 8:16 left, followed by Turner two and a half minutes later, and a man-up tally from Drouin with 48 seconds on the clock.
The two teams exchanged blows in the second. Hobart pulled within three twice, but Colgate had an answer each time to maintain its lead.
Ben Trumble ripped one in just under four minutes into the quarter. Colgate then followed back-to-back Statesmen goals with two straight, thanks to tallies from
Liam Connor and Drouin less than two minutes apart. Minicus also found the back of the net with 1:09 remaining.
Colgate scored three times in the third and held the Statesmen to two. Turner logged his fourth of the contest at the 13:41 mark. Minicus then registered his second, and Drouin completed his hat trick to start a 4-0 Raider run that carried over to the fourth after
Ryan Favaro and Minicus picked up goals.
Rory Connor netted his third of the contest with six and a half minutes remaining.
The Raiders outshot Hobart 52-44 and put 29 on goal to the Statesmen's 25.
