Late Goals Spoil Colgate's Stellar Effort

Raiders Outshoot Terriers 12-9 and Record Season-High 11 Corner Kicks

BOSTON, Mass. — After 86 minutes of scoreless play, Boston University found the back of the net twice in the final four minutes to defeat Colgate 2-0 Wednesday evening.

BU's Mackenzie Stickelman put her team ahead 1-0 in the 86th minute after she buried a loose ball in the box from a free kick played over the top. Morgan Fagan then finished a shot off a cross just over two minutes later, making it 2-0.

The Raiders controlled the first half, outshooting Boston University 10-6 and recording nine corner kicks, four of which came in the opening 10 minutes. The team logged a season-high 11 corners in the game.

Colgate finished the contest with a 12-9 advantage in shots. Both teams logged an even four shots on goal.

Ari Bezanson had two opportunities early on. In the seventh minute, she split a pair of Terrier defenders and dribbled into the box before ripping an open shot that sailed just over the crossbar. Eight minutes later, the sophomore nearly buried one from about 25 yards out that Boston University's goalie made a beautiful leaping save on to deny her.

Fellow sophomore Ana Schremp also had a couple of chances. Three minutes into the game, she turned in the box and fired a shot that got stopped by the keeper. In the 25th minute, Schremp picked up the ball following a collision in the box and had just the goalie to beat but her shot went wide.

Colgate began the second half right where it left off, earning a corner three minutes in and another in the 56th minute. Sara Anelli tried a shot from distance in the 48th minute, but she put it right at the keeper.

The middle part of the second did not see as much action from either side. BU had four corners and a handful of other chances that the Raiders' backline fended off.

In the 75th minute, Ellie Stokes played a ball into the box that landed just out of reach from Schremp. Three minutes later, Ally Giovino had Colgate's best chance of the second half when she put a powerful header just wide of the post.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Lyndse Hokanson

"Genuinely gutted for the group to come away with that result. For long stretches of tonight, they did everything we could have asked, created a ton of chances, and mitigated what BU wanted to do. Unfortunately, it's going to continue to be hard to win games without finding ways to score goals. BU was able to do that tonight, and it was just a bit of grittiness on their part that put them above us on the score sheet. I am really so proud of the ways that this team has grown, and it feels like we're on the doorstep of something really special. Sadly, our sport doesn't always reward great moments and play, it rewards the team that finds a way. We just need that final bit of composure in our attacking box to convert great chances into goals. I'm glad we'll get a chance to rebound with the frustration and disappointment we feel right now against Navy back at home in a few days. There is a lot of season left and everything to play for ahead of us."
