Women’s Soccer Drops 1-0 Decision to Loyola

Raiders outshoot Greyhounds 17-8 in defeat

HAMILTON – Despite controlling the tempo and generating the majority of the night's scoring chances, the Colgate women's soccer team fell 1-0 to Loyola on Saturday evening at Beyer-Small '76 Field.

Colgate (2-11-2, 1-5 Patriot) outshot the Greyhounds 17-8 on the night, including a 5-3 margin in shots on target, but a single second-half breakout proved to be the difference for the visitors.

Molly Richards paced the Raider attack with two shots on goal, while goalkeeper Ella Poppinga made two saves in net.

Moments of the Match
  • 41' | Colgate applied relentless pressure late in the opening half, testing the Greyhounds' backline with four shots on target in the first stanza. Biana Howitt created the half's best chance on a near-breakaway, but her strike was turned aside by the Loyola keeper.
  • 42' | Loyola appeared to take the lead moments before halftime, but the goal was overturned following a video review due to an offside infraction, keeping the match deadlocked 0-0 at the intermission.
  • 47' | The Raiders carried their momentum into the second half with immediate offensive zone pressure. Josie Tunney nearly broke the silence, curling a left-footed strike from the far corner of the box that sailed just over the crossbar.
  • 56' | Loyola struck against the run of play on a quick counterattack. Savannah Manset sprinted down the near sideline and slotted a low cross into the middle of the box, where Betzael Contreras finished a one-timer into the lower left corner for the 1-0 lead.
  • 66' | Richards created space outside the 18-yard box as Colgate hunted for the equalizer, but her hard-driven attempt cleared the crossbar.
  • 90' | Colgate mounted a final surge in the closing minutes, firing the last four shots of the contest. Kaya Sather had a long drive blocked in the box, and Jocelyn Rowe's immediate strike off the ricochet rolled inches wide of the post in the final seconds as Loyola held on.
