WASHINGTON, D.C. — Colgate men's soccer earned its third Patriot League win of the season on Saturday afternoon off the foot of junior
Alejandro Coury, who tallied his second goal of the year that helped edge the Eagles from American, 2-1.
The goal came courtesy of senior Aidan Davock who increased his point total to 12 on the season, good for third-most in the Patriot League.
"The group started the game strong, and responded very well after conceding early," Head Coach Erik Ronning said. "We were persistent throughout the match and earned an important three points on the road. I'm incredibly proud of the guys, but there's lots of work ahead in preparation for some very important games in the next two weeks."
Two early shots from Coury were part of an overall hot start for the Raiders in the nation's capital. However, the Eagles quickly erased the visitor's momentum with a goal at the 24-minute mark.
The resilient Raiders did not let the lead stay for long, finding the equalizer not even 10 minutes later.
A goalkick from junior Oliver Townend pushed the ball up the pitch, which was then corralled by senior Ryan Leask at midfield. Leask sent a hanging through ball down the right side toward a streaking Davock, who pushed past a defender before beating a second with a clean feed to Coury down the center line. Coury converted the chance with a strike from 10 yards out that whistled right over the American keeper's outstretched arms.
After both teams traded blows in the opening minutes of the second frame, junior Timmy Donovan's relentless pressure forced the defender to play a ball back to the goalkeeper under immense pressure. The goalie was unable to cleanly field the pass, allowing the ball to slip between his legs and give Colgate the hard-fought win on the road.
