HAMLTON — Hannah Marcotrigiano scored her first career goal, but it was not enough as Colgate fell 2-1 to Cornell on Wednesday evening at Tyler's Field.
Marcotrigiano got the Raiders on the board with 45 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Off a penalty corner, a loose ball found the stick of
Dani Palmer who passed it to Marcotrigiano for a shot she tapped in from about three feet outside the cage. The freshman's goal cut Cornell's lead to one at 2-1.
The Big Red also notched both of its goals in the third. Eight minutes in, Claire Jones scored after she drove down the left baseline and fired a low shot that found its way into the goal.
Isabella Palde doubled the Big Red lead when she scored just three minutes later. Off a penalty corner, Bridgette Mahoney fired the ball Into the shooting circle and Palde got her stick on it and deflected It into the goal to make it 2-0.
The first quarter saw lots of back-and-forth action, but neither team could get on the scoreboard.
Ella Murphy had a good look at goal, but her shot got blocked by a Cornell defender.
In the second quarter,
Alice Walton ripped a shot but got denied by the Big Red goalie on a pad save.
Amanda Allen prevented Cornell from pulling ahead with a clutch defensive save in the second. Grace Leahy got by
Anna Unger and took a shot that was rolling toward the goal before Allen swooped in and picked up the ball.
Unger recorded three saves in each half for a total of six in the game. This included denying a Big Red player on back-to-back shots from close range in the third quarter.
Colgate finished with five shots in the game, landing four on goal. The Raiders also had two penalty corners.
