ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Ellie Stokes scored her first career goal early in the first half, but the Colgate women's soccer team fell 2-1 at Navy on Friday evening.
Stokes got the Raiders off to a quick start when she scored 30 seconds into the game. The ball got crossed in from the left wing and was bobbled in the box by the goalkeeper. Stokes found the ball and took a shot with her right foot that she put into the right corner of the goal.
Colgate continued to attack in the first half, as the Raiders recorded seven corner kicks and four shots in the first 45 minutes.
In the 24th minute,
Maddie Cappillo fired a shot that got saved by the keeper. It led to a pair of corner kicks for the Raiders, but they could not get anything going.
Ari Bezanson had a chance to score off another corner kick after
Ally Giovino fired a shot that got deflected out of bounce by Navy's goalie. Bezanson ripped a shot that landed off target.
The Raiders had another pair of corner kicks late in the first half but they could not convert.
The Mids tied the game five minutes into the second half. Sadie McCaleb slotted a shot into the bottom right corner of the goal to knot it up at 1-1.
Colgate tried to answer right back, as less than a minute later,
Emily Amano released a shot, but it went wide left of the goal. Stokes had another chance a few minutes later, but her shot got denied by the keeper.
In the 72nd minute,
Anna Keeling ripped a shot that also got stopped. It led to another corner kick for the Raiders, from which Capillo put a shot just wide of the goal.
Navy pulled ahead in the 87th minute. Tatum Kelly received a pass from Chole Dawson that she put into the top-right side of the goal as the Mids took a 2-1 lead.
The Raiders' final chance came off a shot from Bezanson just seconds after the goal, but it got stopped by the goalie.
Navy outshot Colgate 13-12, but the Raiders finished with the advantage in shots on goal at 8-5.
Grace Poncsak logged three saves in net for Colgate.
