Colgate Blanked by Cornell

Big Red Score in 55th Minute to Earn 1-0 Win

HAMILTON — Cornell scored a second half goal to down Colgate 1-0 at Beyer-Small '76 Field Tuesday evening.

Cornell scored in the 55th minute to take the lead. Ashley Durik dribbled into the box and played a short pass to Peyton Nichols for a one-timer that she finished off.

The Raiders recorded a pair of shots early in the game. Ally Giovino ripped a shot on goal that got saved by the goalie, and Ellie Stokes fired a shot that landed left of the goal.

Colgate earned its first corner kick of the game in the 14th minute but could not get anything going as the ball got cleared out of the box before the Raiders could get a shot off.

A few minutes later, Ari Bezanson dribbled to the top of the box and had a good look at goal, but she fired her shot just over the crossbar.

Colgate had two more corner kick opportunities, with chances in the 28th minute and the 37th minute, but it could not convert on either.

At the start of the second, Emily Amano fired a shot from outside the box that got tipped over the bar by the Big Red keeper. It led to another Colgate corner, but the Raiders could not capitalize.

Emma Hickey came up with a save on a shot by Cornell in the 56th minute that prevented the Big Red from doubling its lead. The junior tallied three saves in net for the Raiders.

With 26 minutes remaining, Lilly Frick played a corner into the box that Abbie Grady made good contact on with a header, but it got stopped by Cornell's goalie.

Colgate's final chance was a corner kick with 1:45 remaining, but the Big Red defense held strong.

The Raiders finished with a 12 to 9 advantage in shots, with both teams putting four on goal. Colgate also had eight corner kicks compared to Cornell's two.

Head Coach Lyndse Hokanson

"All in all, I'm proud of the group's effort. Tonight was a good opportunity for a lot of players and I felt as though it was a collectively quality shift from the whole team. Disappointed to concede on a counter attack, but Cornell took its chance well. We've got to find a way to score goals and we'll continue to refine as we get closer to breaking through. Looking toward regrouping for a good Army team this weekend."
