HAMILTON — Villanova scored with 35 seconds remaining to take a 1-0 victory over Colgate on Wednesday at Beyer-Small '76 Field.
Maddie Fried netted the Wildcats' game-winner. She picked up the ball off a short pass from Izzy Newton and fired a shot from 25 yards out that went over the head of
Emma Hickey and landed in the goal.
Colgate had four corner kicks in the first half but could not convert on any of them.
During the Raiders' second corner, the ball fell loose in the box and
Cara Schmidlein fired a shot from close range that got blocked by a Wildcat defender.
With 25 minutes remaining in the first, Colgate was awarded a free kick.
Emily Amano took the kick, but her shot went wide right.
The Raiders had back-to-back corners in the 37th minute, but could not convert on either as the teams went into the half tied at 0-0.
Two minutes into the second, Amano ripped a shot from distance that forced the Wildcats' goalie to make a jumping save. The Raiders earned another corner kick in the 72nd minute. Amano played a low-driven ball into the box, but Colgate could not get a foot on it.
With eight minutes remaining,
Demi Maroudas dribbled into the box and took a shot that soared just over the crossbar.
Colgate fired four shots in the game, landing one on target. The Raiders also finished with a total of six corners in the game.

End score aside, there were a lot of bright moments for us, and I do think we continue to get better and make new mistakes which is what we ask of them. Looking forward to beginning conference play with a fresh slate but a lot of lessons learned. Just want us to continue to stay the course."
