Gruber Garners Patriot League Weekly Honor

Senior DB Named Special Teams Player of the Week

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – William Gruber's 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown at Cornell last Friday helped lead the senior defensive back to Patriot League Special Teams Player of the Week, announced Monday by the league office.

Gruber made history as the second player in program history to return a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown. Barry Chubb '86 did it twice – vs. Columbia on Nov. 2, 1985 and Lafayette Nov. 1, 1986.

From a yard deep in his own end zone, Gruber darted left through a huge hole and raced down the sidelines to pay dirt to tie the game at 7-7 in the first quarter. He also finished with three tackles, one of which was solo, blocked a field goal, and added two pass breakups in the well-rounded effort.

Gruber garnered All-Patriot League First Team honors this past spring as a Return Specialist. This marks the first weekly award of the season for Gruber, and Colgate's second Special Teams Player of the Week selection of the campaign.
