Colgate Caps Weekend with Win

Misken Hurls Complete Game to Improve to 3-0

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Rebecca Johnson went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored to back another complete game gem from Bailey Misken and Colgate capped off opening weekend with an impressive 5-2 victory over Valparaiso on Sunday at Gardner-Webb.

Johnson's two hits included her first triple of the season to lead Colgate's offense. Mia Guevarra and Rachel Carney each posted a double and an RBI, while Misken went the distance allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with five strikeouts to improve to 3-0.

Valparaiso (5-5) scored the game's first run in the top of the first, but Colgate (3-2) countered with four unanswered runs, including two right back in the home half of the first, to avenge Saturday's loss to the Crusaders.

Johnson started the bottom of the first with a single and came all the way around to score on a throwing error by the catcher. Steph Jacoby later doubled to push Nicole Rounsavill into scoring position, and Rounsavill came in to score on an RBI groundout by Guevarra to give the Raiders a 2-1 edge.

The score remained 2-1 until Colgate padded its lead in the bottom of the fifth. Christiana Cottrell led things off with a single and crossed home plate one batter later after Carney smacked a double. Carney scored quickly on a long triple by Johnson to push the lead to 4-1.

The Crusaders got one back in the top of the sixth, but Colgate answered once again in the bottom half when Guevarra doubled and scored on an RBI groundout by Jordan Miller.

Misken dealt a scoreless seventh to lock down her third complete game and improve to 3-0 in the circle this season.
