HAMILTON – The Colgate men's hockey program named four student-athletes pegged for leadership roles as
Paul McAvoy is announced as team captain for the 2020-21 campaign. He is joined by assistant captains
Trevor Cosgrove,
Tyler Jeanson, and
Josh McKechney.
CAPTAIN
A senior forward, McAvoy had a breakout season in 2019-20 where he marked the second-most goals on the team with nine. The Richmond, Ky., native added eight assists for 17 points on the year while recording two game-winning goals. After posting a four-point weekend against then-No. 16 Harvard and then-No. 20 Dartmouth, McAvoy was named ECAC Hockey Player of the Week on Jan. 27.
Succeeding in the classroom as well, McAvoy has been a three-time honoree on the Raider Academic Honor Roll and ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team as an English (creative writing) and psychology double-major.
ASSISTANT CAPTAINS
A senior defenseman, Cosgrove joins McAvoy in adding a patch to his sweater by being named an assistant captain. Coming out of the 2019-20 season, the Exeter, N.H., native recorded a team-leading 11 assists on the year, and finished with the second-best plus/minus rating on the team at plus-6 on the ice.
While on the ice his 64 shots on goal topped all defensemen on the squad, Cosgrove was honored off the ice as an ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team member for the third straight time as a political science major.
Hailing from Carman, Manitoba, Jeanson will flank Cosgrove with an "A" patch this season. The forward posted six points by two goals and four assists in 2019-20 when lacing up for 25 games. Named to the Raider Academic Honor Roll and ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team, Jeanson majors in political science and holds 24 career points in 97 games played.
Rounding out the leadership team is senior forward McKechney. A back-to-back recipient of the team's Steve Riggs Memorial Award for gentlemanly play, the Calgary, Alberta native recorded seven points by three goals and four assists in 2019-20.
In addition to marking two power play goals this past year, McKechney holds a total of 39 career points. While he's suited up for the Raiders on 111 occasions, McKechney has also been a Raider Academic Honor Roll member as an economics major.
Collectively, the leadership team tallied 41 points in the 2019-20 season and 130 in their combined Colgate careers.
