Hall of Honor Q&A – Joel Gardner ’90

Sparked Raider Run to 1990 NCAA Championship Game; Still Top 10 in Career Points, Assists

HAMILTON – Induction for the Colgate Athletics Hall of Honor takes place Saturday during Homecoming Weekend.
 
In advance of those ceremonies, Colgate Athletics compiled a brief question-and-answer session with each of the honorees. Today's honoree is Joel Gardner '90 from men's hockey.
 
30656Gardner helped propel Colgate to the 1990 ECAC Hockey championship, setting off a postseason trek that carried all the way to the NCAA championship game.
 
He was an All-America selection that season and remains solidly inside Colgate's career top 10 in points (seventh with 184) and assists (fifth with 113) to go with 71 goals. Gardner combined for 14 points in Colgate's eight playoff games that year and finished as the team's overall leading scorer with 26 goals and 36 assists for 62 points.

What is your current occupation?
"AF Tech USA Ltd., manufacturer of fire inhibitor and fire suppression products."
 
Why did you choose to attend Colgate?
"I was recruited by Brian Durocher, and being from a small Canadian town, Colgate just had that same warm feeling and knowing you were not just a student number in another big university."
 
Who proved to be most instrumental to your success as a Colgate student-athlete?
"My coaches, Terry Slater and Brian Durocher."
 
What was your favorite Colgate moment?
"First day I arrived, my mother dropped me off. And as I was entering East Hall with my suitcase and gym bags, I remember standing at the front entrance and saying to myself, 'Here we go; make this the best four years.' And in I went."
 
What would you characterize as your biggest accomplishment since graduating from Colgate?
"Being married for 27 years and raising two great kids."
