HAMILTON – Colgate athletics team physician
Dr. Merrill Miller was awarded the 2017 Silver Puck Award from the Colgate men's ice hockey program and Silver Puck Club at its banquet Saturday night at the Hall of President's on campus.
Dr. Miller is in her 36
th year as the Colgate athletics team physician and has been an active supporter of not just the Colgate men's ice hockey program but Colgate athletics as a whole throughout her time in Hamilton.
"If you take the description of the Silver Puck Award that it is 'given to a person whose continued support and contributions to the Colgate hockey program warrant special recognition and applause' then there is no one more deserving than Dr. Miller," men's ice hockey head coach
Don Vaughan said.
"Over her 36 years at Colgate she has helped countless hockey players get back to health and on the ice playing. But more than that, she is a loyal and generous supporter of The Silver Puck Club itself. Colgate is in her DNA and we are so lucky to have her."
Miller has been a trailblazer in the medical field, hailed in the "Medics" section of
People magazine as the country's first and only female head physician for a Division I FBS or FCS College Football Team.
In addition to serving as the Team Physician, Dr. Miller is the director of health services for Colgate's 2,900 students, co-chairperson of Colgate's Health Sciences Advisory Committee, co-chairperson of Colgate's Wellness Initiative, a board member of SOMAC Ambulance Corps, and an Advisory Board member of the Fiver Children's Foundation. She was also a past president of Community Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Miller has been recognized for her support of Colgate Athletics before as she is a recipient of the John LeFevre Athletic Appreciation, Maroon Council, and Senior Class awards.
In her spare time, Dr. Miller is also the host and producer of the weekly WRCU-FM radio show, "What's Up, Doc?"
The Silver Puck Award is given by the club to a person or persons whose continued support and contributions to the Colgate Men's Ice Hockey program warrant special recognition and applause. The award is puck-sized and silver-plated, weighing three pounds and inscribed with the recipient's name.
