HAMILTON – Momentum continues to build in the Colgate men's lacrosse program with Tuesday's announcement of this year's recruiting class.
The defending Patriot League champions and head coach
Mike Murphy and staff welcome 16 members of the Class of 2019. The Raiders signed four attackers, six midfielders, three defensemen, one long-stick midfielder and two goalkeepers.
"I am very excited for our bicentennial class," Murphy said. "Our staff worked very hard cultivating this class. It has a great deal of potential, but we have a long way to go before February and the start of the season.
"I am not 100 percent sure, but it might be one of our most decorated classes scholastically to begin its Colgate career."
Eight states are represented in the class, with four from Massachusetts, three from New Jersey, two each from California, Maryland and New York, and single representatives from Colorado, Pennsylvania and Texas.
This year's class graduates in 2019, when Colgate celebrates its 200th anniversary.
"We have multiple state champions, All-Americans and All-State or All-League performers," Murphy said. "I am interested in seeing what they can do at the collegiate level. Some will prove to be ready right away and others will need time to develop their games, but all will have the opportunity to make their mark in maroon and white."
The Raiders produced Patriot League Rookie of the Year recipients in 2012, 2014 and 2015, and Murphy hopes that streak continues.
"We've been very fortunate to have had three of the last four Patriot League rookies of the year, so we soon will see if there is a young man in this group who can follow in the footsteps of
Anthony Abbadessa,
Brandon Burke and
Ryan Walsh," Murphy said.
Fall skill sessions are underway, with full practices slated to start Sept. 21.
Colgate once again is taking part in the Face Off for a Cause event Oct. 11 at Siena, for the Wounded Warrior Project. The Raiders will play a pair of games that afternoon, with the times to be announced.
Colgate also is taking on Hill Academy in an Oct. 18 scrimmage at 12:30 p.m.
