VESTAL, N.Y. – Colgate finished the day with 12 runs and 16 hits after splitting a mid-week doubleheader with Binghamton on Wednesday. The Raiders earned an exciting 11-8, come-from-behind victory in game one before falling to the Bearcats in game two 12-1 in five innings.

The Raiders and Bearcats combined for 19 runs in the opening game but it was Colgate that came out victorious. In a back-and-forth contest, both teams took their turn holding the lead. After trailing 8-5 in the bottom of the sixth, the Raiders found their bats in the top of the seventh recording six big runs to steal the win.

"In the first game it was great to see the team battle in the late innings and put together a rally in order to secure a win," head coach Melissa Finley said. "We didn't make it easy on ourselves but it was a full team effort and everyone contributed. Exciting games like that are always fun to play in."

Game two belonged to the Bearcats as they only needed five innings to notch the win. Colgate took the early 1-0 edge but Binghamton quickly answered controlling much of the rest of the game to take the 12-1 victory.

"In the second game we did a good job of scoring first but they came out swinging and we couldn't recover," Finley added. "It would have been nice to see us bounce back offensively and give Gillian (Murray) some support by scoring some more runs ourselves.

"I want us to take the things we did well today into tomorrow and build upon that success; take care of the details and build some more momentum going into the weekend."

Colgate (10-25) saw Tera Vaughn go 4-for-6 on the day with two RBIs. Mariel Schlaefer added two hits, three runs, three RBIs and a walk in her six at bats, while rookies Gillian Murray and Tara Grennan both chipped in two hits. Murray also crossed the plate twice with two RBIs, while Grennan contributed to Colgate's run total with one of her own. One of Murray's two hits was a home run as well, which was her first career long ball.

Brigit Ieuter and Megan Carnase both saw action in game one with Ieuter earning the start. Ieuter went 2.1 innings allowing four hits and six runs before Carnase came in for relief giving up four hits and two runs in 4.2 innings of work. In game two, Murray went all four innings allowing 12 hits and 12 runs.

Binghamton (19-19) was led by Bridget Hunt, who went 6-for-8 with five runs and six RBIs. Sydney Harbaugh recorded four hits, four runs, and three RBIs in her five at bats, while fellow teammate Colleen Dougherty went 3-for-5 with three runs and an RBI.

Demi Laney pitched a solid five innings in game one allowing five hits and four runs before Annika Wiesinger came in to pitch the final two, giving up six hits and seven runs, three of which were earned. Shelby Donhauser had a strong outing for the Bearcats in the nightcap, giving up five hits and just one run during her five innings of work.

Game One
After a scoreless opening inning and a half, Binghamton saw Cadogan notched a leadoff solo home run to take the early 1-0 edge.

Colgate wasted little time trailing, however, as Alessandra Moore hit a double to right field to lead off the top of the third. On the next at bat, Eileen Ornousky reached base on an error to place two Raider runners on board. Binghamton was able to record its first out of the inning but a Katie Bushee double on the next at bat scored Moore from second to knot the game at 1-1. On the ensuing play Schlaefer hit a bomb to center field to clear the bases and lift the Raiders to a 4-1 advantage.

And back and fourth we went as the Bearcats answered with a three-run homer of their own to tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom half. Before the inning was over, though, Binghamton had retaken the lead at 6-4.

The Bearcats increased their advantage to 7-4 in the bottom of the fourth before Murray's homer to left field for Colgate in the top of the sixth pulled the Raiders to within two, at 7-5

Binghamton tacked on another run in the bottom half but could not find an answer for a big Raider seventh inning, which featured six runs. With one out in the inning, Kate Zucker doubled down the right field line to get a runner in scoring position. Bushee was hit by a pitch on the next at bat to place two Colgate runners on base.

During the ensuing play Schlaefer singled and then advanced to second on the throw. Bushee went from first to third, while Zucker touched home thanks to an error. Haley Fleming then reached base courtesy of another error, which scored Bushee cutting the Bearcats lead to one, at 8-7. Vaughn followed that up with a two-RBI single to center field to put the Raiders ahead for the first time since the top of the third. Before the inning concluded, Colgate added two more runs after singles from Grennan and Ornousky, making it an 11-8 ballgame.

Carnase finished the bottom half for Colgate pitching a one, two, three inning to ultimately secure the win.

Game Two
Colgate jumped out to the early 1-0 lead after the opening half inning. With one out, Fleming singled to center field to get a runner on board. Schlaefer reached base on the next at bat thanks to a fielder's choice after Fleming was tagged out at second. Vaughn found the gap again for the Raiders on the ensuing play to put runners on first and second. Murray followed that with a single to reel in Schlaefer from second for the 1-0 advantage.

Unfortunately, the Bearcats registered a pair of two-run homers in the bottom half to take over the edge at 4-1.

Binghamton increased its lead with eight more runs in the next two innings to create an 11-run deficit between the teams. The Bearcats were able to hold onto their advantage in the remaining two innings to secure the five-inning victory.

The Raiders have a quick turnaround as they welcome Albany for a doubleheader Thursday at Eaton Street Field. The games are scheduled to start at 3 p.m.

NOTES: Vaughn is now eighth in career at bats with 550, tied for 13th in career runs scored with 77, tied for sixth in career hits with 169, 10th in career RBI with 82, and ninth in career total bases with 217.
