Raiders Find Hits in Win Against Binghamton

Colgate Takes Down Bearcats In Opening Game of George Mason Cherry Blossom Tournament, 9-1

Haley Fleming went 1-for-2 on the day with two runs and an RBI as Colgate took down Binghamton.
Box Score
FAIRFAX, Va. – Two big innings for Colgate to start the game handed them a comfortable eight-run lead before ultimately securing a 9-1 victory in six innings over Binghamton on Friday afternoon.

Colgate (2-9) was led by Haley Fleming and Marisa Dowling, who both went 1-for-2 with two runs and an RBI throughout the contest. Junior catcher Alyssa Chaulklin added a hit and a run, while senior Tera Vaughn posted a hit, a run, and a RBI in the game. Overall the Raiders finished with nine runs, six hits and five RBI in the victory.

Sophomore Brigit Ieuter had another solid outing in the circle, pitching six strong innings and not allowing a hit until the top of the fourth. She finished the game allowing four hits and just one run, while also recording a season-high six strikeouts for her second win of the year.

Fleming started a Raider rally with a one-out walk in the bottom of the first. On the ensuing play Dowling doubled to left center, scoring Fleming, to give Colgate the 1-0 edge. Binghamton registered its second out before Vaughn reached base on an error and advanced to second on the throw. Dowling was able to score on the play to push the Raider lead to 2-0. During the next at bat, rookie Tara Grennan singled through the left side, to score Vaughn, making it 3-0 in favor of the Raiders.

Again in the second inning Colgate was able to find its bats, posting five runs, to increase its advantage to 8-0. With one out in the inning, Chaulklin and Katie Bushee both reached base on back-to-back errors to get two runners on. A walk from Fleming on the next at bat loaded the bases, giving Colgate a chance to widen its margin. Dowling and Eileen Ornousky then earned consecutive walks to score two more Raider runs before Vaughn and Alex Wilson singled to create an eight-run gap between the teams.

Colgate was also on its game defensively. After recording two outs in the top of the third, Grennan made an incredible catch on a foul ball to put the Bearcats down one, two, three, to keep Ieuter's shutout and no-hitter alive.

Unfortunately, a home run by Binghamton in the top of the fourth ended those hopes and gave the Bearcats their only run in the game.

But the Raiders added one final run in the bottom of the sixth after Bushee earned a walk to start the inning. On the next at bat, Fleming doubled through the left side, scoring Bushee from first, ending the game due to the eight-run rule.

Colgate is back on the field again today at 4:45 p.m. against host George Mason.
