SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Medal performances in the Collegiate events and strong showings in the Novice races highlighted Colgate's weekend at the Head of the Fish Regatta.
Dempsey Wartell captured the silver medal and
Susan Blick placed fifth in the Women's Collegiate Light 1X Final. Wartell crossed in 14 minutes and 49.53 seconds, missing the gold medal by 1.1 seconds behind the winner from Marist. Blick posted a time of 15:30.86, while another Raider,
Maddy Canning, finished ninth in 16:48.99.
In the Collegiate 2X Final, the Raider duo of
Catherine Walsh and
Susie Meyer won bronze in a time of 14:01.10.
Abby Yosaitis and Katherine Halle finished seventh for the Raiders in 14:33.40.
Colgate just missed a medal in the Collegiate 4+ Final, finishing fourth with a time of 14:03.21. On board for the Raiders were
Kelly Tucker (coxswain), Blick, Wartell, Walsh and Meyer. Colgate's B boat of
Lauren Yeary (coxswain), Yosaitis, Halle,
Laura Genty and Amy Abshier finished 25th in 15:42.23.
Colgate won silver in the Novice 4+ Final.Raves for the Novice BoatsColgate's A boat captured silver in the Novice 4+ Final with a time of 14:16.28. The crew consisted of
Georgia Butcher (coxswain), Sophie Pennoyer, Suzanne Hierl, Muriel Drexler and Carrie Coote. The Colgate B boat with Marie Benton (coxswain), Celine Marlin Andrews, Maria Cesarini, Brittany Rios and Amy Abshier finished 16th in 17:46.56.
The Raiders won bronze in the Novice 8+ Final. Colgate's crew of Butcher (coxswain),
Katie Kelleher, Hierl, Pennoyer, Cesarini, Drexler, Danielle Norgren, Andrews and Coote crossed in 13:57.72, defeating 25 other boats in the race.
"This was one of our best performances in the Novice events in the past five or six years," Raiders head coach Greg Kurczynski said. "We came in second in the Novice 4+ and third in the Novice 8+. This was phenomenal and
Kathy Les did a great job having our women ready.
"We had a couple of other medal winners as well, with one of our senior captains,
Dempsey Wartell, second in the single and Cat Walsh and
Susie Meyer getting bronze in the Collegiate Double. And our Collegiate 4+ boat did a really good job coming in fourth. I was really very happy with that."
The Raiders captured bronze in the Collegiate Novice 8+.Finally, Colgate boats in the Collegiate 4x Final placed fifth and eighth. The A boat saw Tucker (coxswain), Blick, Wartell, Walsh and Meyer cross in 13:58.57, while the B boat of Yeary (coxswain), Yosaitis, Genty, Kelleher and Halle posted a time of 14:38.89.
Colgate's next competition is Saturday at the Collegiate Small Boat Challenge in Mercer Lake, New Jersey.
