HAMILTON – The Colgate women's hockey team did not back down against its nationally ranked opponent on Friday night as it outshot No. 5/6 Harvard 29-25 in an eventual 5-4 loss.

"It was a hard-fought game tonight," Colgate head coach Greg Fargo said. "You look at the score and obviously you want a better result, but for the most part we really liked a lot of things that we did. This is a group that continues to learn from themselves. What we haven't done a lot is win games and we have to start to find a way to win these close games down the stretch.

"We've got to learn from this and get better. We have to find a way to respond against Dartmouth tomorrow."

The Raiders held the advantage for most of the game. After taking a 1-0 lead in the first period, the Crimson tallied two quick goals to kick off the second, grabbing the 2-1 edge. Colgate would respond, however, with two goals of its own during that frame to retake the lead 3-2. The Raiders then started the final period with a goal to create a two-goal margin between the teams. But Harvard scored three unanswered goals in the final 10 minutes to ultimately secure its win.

Colgate (5-16-2, 2-9-0 ECAC) saw four different players record markers in the game with Taylor Craig leading the way with a goal and an assist. Senior captain Megan Wickens also posted her second goal of the year, while Jocelyn Simpson and Melissa Kueber both registered their fourth.

The Raiders' outshot Harvard in this high-scoring game and earned two of three double-digit shooting periods. Colgate also kept Harvard scoreless on all three of its power play opportunities.

No. 5/6 Harvard (13-2-2, 9-2-1 ECAC) started slow out of the gate but finished the game scoring three markers in the final frame to take the win. Miye D'Oench led all skaters with three points on the night from one goal and two helpers. Hillary Crowe posted two goals while the Parker sisters (Mary and Elizabeth) both tallied a goal.

Colgate jumped out to a quick start, notching the game's opening goal just 51 seconds into the first period. Katie Case found the puck in the right faceoff circle and tried her luck on net. Her initial shot was saved, but Harvard's netminder couldn't fall on the rebound quick enough as Craig finished off the rebound and lifted the Raiders to the early 1-0 advantage.

Just as quickly as Colgate had done in the first frame, Harvard wasted no time knotting the score just one minute into the second period. Mary Parker collected the puck from D'Oench and one-timed it past Colgate's goalie Ashlynne Rando's right shoulder for the equalizer.

A mere 55 seconds later, Harvard again struck when it saw Crowe find the back of the net. Samantha Reber and Sydney Daniels combined to find Crowe in the right faceoff circle. She fired one toward goal, beating Rando to give the Crimson the 2-1 advantage.

Colgate would not let up against its nationally ranked foe, however, as the Raiders scored two goals over the course of three minutes to take a 3-2 edge heading into the final intermission. The Raider goals came from Wickens and Simpson during that stretch.

Early in the third period, Colgate looked to have tallied an insurance marker when Kueber hit a laser of a shot into the back of the net for the 4-2 Raider lead.

At the 10:26 mark, though, D'Oench finished off a scrum in front of the goal to cut Harvard's deficit to one. Three minutes later, the Crimson again came from behind the knot the score when Elizabeth Parker earned her second of the season.

Harvard scored the game-winner just 21 seconds later to ultimately steal the victory and cap the come-from-behind win.

Crimson netminder Emerance Maschmeyer made 25 saves in her 10th win of the season, while Rando notched 20 in the loss.

Colgate is back in Starr Rink on Saturday when it hosts Dartmouth at 4 p.m. The Big Green won the season's earlier meeting in Hanover, N.H., 2-1.

NOTES: Colgate's four goals were the most allowed by Harvard all season...Seven Raider players recorded a point in the tough loss to their nationally ranked opponent.
