HAMILTON –
Junior Tera Vaughn had a dominant performance Tuesday when she led the Colgate softball team with four hits in six at bats. The Raiders fell to Binghamton 7-1 and 7-3.

“Binghamton showed up and gave us two very competitive games,” head coach Melissa Finley said. “It was a great warm up for us as we head into this weekend. Defensively, we let ourselves down and gave up too many unearned runs and extra bases. We fought back in the second game and I liked that we scored in multiple innings but it is hard to keep playing catch up.”

Colgate (15-24) saw Vaughn tally their lone run in the first doubleheader. Eileen Ornousky went 2-for-3 and earned an RBI when she knocked in Vaughn during her one game of action. Both Alana Dyson and Haley Fleming notched one hit and one run on the day, while rookie Alex Gadiano hit her second home run in as many days.

Binghamton (22-13) was led by Jessica Bump, who went 4-for-7 with three runs and two RBIs. Griffin McIver added three hits, two runs and three RBIs during her six at bats while Sydney Harbaugh went 3-for-7 with two runs and one RBI. Taylor Chaffee tallied three hits including a three-run homer in game two.

The Bearcats started game two taking a 3-0 lead thanks to Chaffee's home run to left center in the top of the first. Bump started out the inning earning a walk and then stole second to get her in scoring position. The next batter Harbaugh singled to the pitcher, advancing Bump to third. With one out Chaffee's hit cleared the bases creating a three-run deficit.

Colgate cut the advantage to 3-1 in the bottom half of the inning after the Raiders completed a double steal. Dyson lead off reaching first on an error. Following her, Haley Fleming earned a walk moving Dyson to second. Mariel Schlaefer reached on a fielder's choice after the Bearcats tagged Fleming out at second. Dyson moved to third on the play. During the next at bat, Colgate converted on a double steal, which allowed Dyson to reach home.

In the next inning, Gadiano pulled the Raiders to within one at 3-2, when she blasted one over the center field fence. She now has four season hits with two of them being home runs.

An Emmie Dolfi sacrifice fly knotted the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the third. Fleming started the inning singling to third base. She would advance to second, following a Schlaefer walk. Binghamton then called on Kate Price to come in and pitch for relief. During the next at bat both Fleming and Schleader advanced bases on a wild pitch before Dolfi knocked in Fleming with her fly out.

The Bearcats didn't waste any time on retaking the lead as they answered in the next inning. Bump led off with a double to right field. She then advanced to third on a wild pitch before a sacrifice fly by Lisa Cadogan brought her home.

Binghamton added to their lead in the top of the fifth with three hits. After Jessica Phillips reached on an error, McIver doubled to left field, scoring Phillips from first base. The Raiders notched one out before Caitlyn Friis singled and then advanced to third on an error allowing McIver to score. Yet again, Colgate tallied another out before Bump singled up the middle, scoring Friis for the four-run advantage.

With two outs in the bottom half of the inning; Colgate found itself with the bases loaded after three straight singles. Dolfi started the Raiders rally singling to right field. Natalie Siedhof followed that up by singling through the left side, advancing Dolfi to second. The next batter Vaughn found a hole up the middle, loading the bases. Colgate was unable to convert on the opportunity as the Bearcats earned their last out.

Winning relief pitcher Kate Price, came in to pitch three innings allowing three hits and no runs. Rhoda Marsteller started the game going two innings giving up two hits and three runs.

Brigit Ieuter retired one batter before allowing two hits and three runs. Senior Courtney O'Connell came in for relief giving up eight hits and four runs during her 4.1 innings of work.

After two scoreless innings in game one, the Bearcats hit a leAd off homer to take the early 1-0 advantage. Bump blasted one over the center field fence to create a one-run deficit between the teams.

Binghamton tacked on another run in the top of the fifth thanks to a single to left field. With one out Dougherty singled to the shortstop to get a runner on base.  Bump then advanced her to second after she followed that up with a single. After a double steal, Harbaugh brought home Dougherty with a single to left field.

In the next inning, King homered down the left field line to score two more Binghamton runs. Following one out, McIver reached on an error before King brought her home on the next at bat.

The Bearcats finished out their scoring in the top of the seventh by knocking in three runs to create a seven-run deficit. Harbaugh reached first and then advanced to second all following a Raiders error. During the next at bat, Cadogan singled up the middle, which allowed Harbaugh to score from second. Binghamton kept the inning going after Chaffee singled through the left side, advancing Kane to second. Colgate was able to get its first out of the inning when Phillips hit a sacrifice bunt, moving both runners up a base. The next batter McIver singled through the left side, scoring Shannon Kane and Lisa Cutrona, who had both come in to pinch run.

Colgate tried to rally with two outs in the bottom half of the inning, when Vaughn hit a double through the left side. Jennifer Martin earned a walk in the next at bat before Ornousky singled up the middle, which allowed Vaughn to score from second for Colgate's only run.

Binghamton notched the last out of the inning to stop the Raiders rally and secure their victory in game one.

Demi Laney earned the win, pitching seven innings allowing seven hits and one run. She tallied five strikeouts during her time in the circle.

Rookie Megan Carnase gave up nine hits and seven runs during her six innings of work. She also recorded four strikeouts for the Raiders.

Colgate hosts top-seeded Lehigh on Saturday and Sunday for a four game doubleheader with the Mountain Hawks to close out the PL regular season. Both doubleheaders are scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. Colgate will also acknowledge four senior players on Sunday for their impressive careers.
