On Aug. 5, 2010, defenseman Joey Mormina signed with the Kassel Huskies of the German Ice Hockey League with the idea that he'd play out his career in Europe after five pretty successful pro seasons in North America.
Twenty-two days later, the Huskies went bankrupt and folded.
Kassel's loss was Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's gain.
Mormina changed his plans, came to Penguins training camp and has been a valuable veteran on the team's blue line ever since.
On Tuesday, he was named the 18th captain in franchise history.
"He believes in what we're doing," coach John Hynes said. "He's a very good veteran presence for us. He's a high-character guy. He's a guy we feel as though, and the team felt as though, had the right attributes as a person and as a player to be the leader of our team."
