HAMILTON, N.Y. – Patrick Letourneau's late goal gave the Colgate men's soccer team the equalizer with only 40 seconds left in regulagtion as the Raiders forced a 1-1 tie with Vermont on Sunday afternoon.

Colgate (1-4-3) was led by Letourneau who scored the game-tying goal, while Mike Reidy had a team-high six shots. Liam Stapleton earned the start in net and had three saves on the day.

Vermont (2-3-2) saw Joe Losier score its lone goal with a penalty kick and Conor Leland made eight saves in net.

"We responded very well after a poor effort on Friday,"  head coach Erik Ronning says. "I am very proud of the way we fought back after giving up a goal and felt our guys deserved a win today. We still have much to work on but we made a step forward today. Our second season starts Saturday vs American and I know we will be ready."

Reidy got the Raiders off to a quick start in the first half with his dominant control of the midfield. He broke through the Catamounts midfield to create a fast break with Tanner Schilling. They earned Colgate's first scoring opportunity with a smart give-and-go between each other at the top of the box. Vermont cleared the ball away at the last second before a shot was taken.

Utilizing its speed Colgate spread the field wide for Shane Conlin to get a long cross off. The ball flew by Dan Matthews who tried to put a head on it as well as Reidy who slid, missing the ball by inches.

Colgate's physical play gave Vermont its first chance of the game. A tricky free kick from the top of the 18-yard box, which was taken by Losier, deflected directly to Stapleton for the save.

Matthews created a fast break opportunity with 20 minutes left in the first half as he played it wide for Conlin to run onto. Conlin beat two Vermont players to play the ball back into Matthews at the top of the box. The technical ability of Matthews allowed him to take the ball out of the air and strike it just over the crossbar gave Colgate another great scoring attempt.

The Raider defense had a strong half only conceding one shot on goal. The game remained scoreless going into halftime although Colgate dominated the shots column with eight.

Early in the second half Colgate continued to spread the field wide with a long run by Conlin. After cutting the ball back from the touchline, he tried his luck at a near post shot, but Leland was able to come up with the save.

With 20 minutes left in the game Colgate looked to break the scoreless tie with a scoring opportunity by Reidy. He took the ball deep into the box, beating the Catamounts defense and he took a shot, but it was deflected by a Vermont player. Nick Rizzo then had an opportunity off the deflection and he one timed it at goal, however,  Leland was able to save it off the goal line.

A tough break for Colgate gave Vermont a penalty kick off a handball in the box.  Losier was able to place it in the right hand side of the goal giving the Catamounts a 1-0 lead late into the game.

A yellow card was issued to a Vermont player with only 40 seconds left in the game and it gave the Raiders a free kick and a last chance at goal. Stapleton played a long ball into the back of the box where the ball was kept in by Conlin. He was able to get the ball over to Letourneau, who fired it into the back of the net with a header, tying the game at 1-1.

With a few chances for both teams in double overtime the game ended tied at 1-1. Colgate's next game will be its first Patriot League matchup as they host American at 4 p.m. next Saturday, September 22.
