Box Score
HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Colgate men's soccer team outshot Wofford College in its first game back at Van Doren Field since Sept. 1, but dropped 4-0 to the Terriers.
Colgate (1-4 -2) had a good performance from seniors
Mike Garzi and
Mike Reidy as they controlled most of the midfield for the Raiders.
Wofford (4-2) got two goals from forward Alex Hutchins. Blair Gaines and Forrest Lasso also notched goals for the Terriers while Andrew Drennan made three saves.
Both teams played very physical soccer throughout the first half. Wofford's Nester Jaramillo had the first opportunity of the match after he tested the Colgate midfield taking a long shot on goal but missed wide.
Colgate quickly responded with Reidy's shot from outside just wide, 10 minutes into game. The Raiders followed that up with another opportunity at the net after
Nick Arpey made a great run at goal. He overlapped
Dan Matthews on the left side of the field and played a long cross over to
Shane Conlin who placed the ball at the top of the box. However, Colgate was unable to put it away.
Conlin earned a corner by using his quick foot skills and speed against the Terrier defender Taylor Grim. The Raiders ended up having another scoring chance off that corner by a header from
Cameron McCaslin. He headed it over the net, but gave Colgate great momentum mid-way through the half.
Wofford was the first to snag a goal with 25 minutes left in the half. During a scramble in front of the Raiders' box the Terriers' Hutchins was able to split the defense and played a ball directly to Gaines. He took one touch and placed it in the bottom right hand corner, giving Wofford a 1-0 lead.
Just five minutes later, a penalty kick was awarded to the Terriers. Hutchins was able to put the ball in the right side of the goal extending the lead to two.
Late into the half Colgate was able to create a fast break with
Nick Rizzo's speed. He played a high cross from the right side of the field to
Tyler Forbes, but the Terrier goalie was able to grab it out of the air.
The Terriers ended the half up 3-0 after they notched another goal off a set piece. Carlos Dominquez Gonzalez played a ball from 40 yards out to the back of the box. Forrest Lasso was able to head the ball into the right hand corner of the net.
Early into the second half the physical play continued with possession split between the two teams. Wofford added to its lead in the fifth minute off a run by Jaramillo. He played the ball into Hutchins who placed it in the far side of the goal giving them a 4-0 advantage.
Matthews gave Colgate its first chance of the half. He took on two Wofford defenders before creating space for himself to take a great strike from the top of the box. The ball sailed over the goal, but gave Colgate another great opportunity at net.
Liam Stapleton started the second half for the Raiders and came up big off a long set piece taken by the Terriers at midfield. He was able to grab the ball out of the air through a mixed mess of players.
Conlin placed a great ball at the foot of Garzi who took one touch and shot deep into the box. Terriers' defender Billy Padula was able to slide and knock it away off the goal line.
The game ended with Wofford coming away with a 4-0 win. The Raiders will be back in action Sunday in the second game of their CU Fall Classic as they take on the Vermont Catamounts at 1 p.m.
