HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Colgate men's soccer team outshot Villanova in its match on Saturday afternoon, but an early goal by the Wildcats gave the visitors a 1-0 win over the Raiders at Van Doren Field.

Colgate (1-1-1) had its chances throughout the game with 13 total shots with two getting on net. Shane Conlin had five to lead the team, while Mike Reidy had three shots. Grant Reed got the start in net and made two saves in the loss and Liam Stapleton saw action in the final eight minutes of play.

Villanova (3-0-0) got its lone goal from William Cason in the second minute of the game on an assist from Sean Sheridan. John Fogarty made the lead stand as he made two saves with one in each half.

The Wildcats took a quick 1-0 lead with Cason scoring in the second minute. Sean Sheridan served the ball in on a short corner situation and Cason outjumped a Colgate defender and headed the ball into the upper corner for the early advantage. The teams played evenly throughout the first half, but the Raiders enjoyed more quality scoring chances but fired a few shots wide. Colgate had a 7-2 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes.

The Raiders had four opportunities on corners to try and even the score in the second half. The best two chances came of the feet of Reidy and Conlin. Reidy's opportunity was the best of the day as he sat at the far post and a service made it through traffic and right to his feet. He drilled a shot, but Fogarty was in good position and made the save to keep the Wildcats up 1-0. Later in the match in the 83rd minute, Conlin had his chance from deep in Villanova territory. Unfortunately, he chipped the ball just wide of the mark.

Villanova outshot the Raiders in the second half, 7-6, and earned the 1-0 win.

The Raiders will be back in action on Monday evening at 7 p.m. at Syracuse.
