IRVINE, Calif. – The Colgate women's volleyball played in its second match of the day and dropped a 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-8) decision to Arizona State on the California Irvine campus.
The Raiders (0-5) got six kills from
Michelle McCarthy and five from
Lindsay Young to lead the way.
Kaylee Fifer chipped in with eight assists and
Caitlin Cremin had eight digs.
The Sun Devils (5-0) saw Macey Gardner put forth a big game with 18 kills, while Erica Wilson had 14 strikes. Allison Palmer recorded 40 assists and Stephanie Preach had 18 digs.
The Sun Devils came out in the first set and got a 3-1 lead, but the Raiders fought back to tie the set at 7-7 thanks to kills by Liz Karnes and
Diane Seely. Arizona State then scored five of the next six points to make it 12-8 and forced a timeout. Colgate fired back with three-straight points, including a kill from McCarthy to get to within one at 12-11. The Sun Devils then closed out the set with a12-6 run. Colgate made a run at the end with three-straight points, but ASU came away with the 25-18 win.
The two teams started the second set with back-and-forth play with neither team earning more than a one-point advantage. The Sun Devils earned the first advantage as they built a 12-8 lead with a 4-0 run.

Kate Reilly and
Diane Seely each had kills early on in the match. The Raiders chipped away at the lead and had a run of their own to get to within two points at 15-13 after kills by Young and
Mari Faines. The Sun Devils responded with a 7-1 advantage down the stretch to earn the 25-18 win and went up 2-0 in the match.
In the third set, Arizona State opened up with a 5-0 lead and Colgate couldn't recover. The Sun Devils took control from the start and won the final set by a 25-6 score.
The Raider will be back on the court tomorrow at 1 p.m. to face the hosts in California Irvine, followed by a 6 p.m. matchup against the nation's top team in Nebraska.
