Box Score
A late goal allowed couldn't dampen the Colgate spirits after the Raiders earned an impressive 1-1 men's soccer draw Sunday night at nationally ranked St. John's.
Mike Reidy's 50th-minute score on a penalty kick nearly held up for the Raiders, who matched the No. 15/13-ranked Red Storm shot for shot on their Queens home turf. St. John's tied the game with less than four minutes left in regulation when Jelani Williams scored on a give-and-go.
It was Colgate's second overtime contest for the weekend. The Raiders allowed a late equalizer to Binghamton in Friday's home opener before scoring early in the extra session for a 3-2 victory.
This result might be more impressive, however, coming on the road against such a strong opponent.
St. John's entered the game ranked 15th by the National Soccer Coaches Association and 13th by Soccer America. The Red Storm are preseason picks to win one of the two Big East Conference divisions after claiming a league tournament title in 2011.
Second-Half Pressure
Colgate (1-0-1) got off the game's first shot on goal when
Shane Conlin forced a save in the opening 10 minutes by St. John's goalkeeper Rafael Diaz.
Mike Reidy fired on target for the Raiders in the 23rd minute, and Conlin made another quality effort just before the break.
Colgate keeper Grant Reid faced two shots in the first half, although none was on target.
But the second half turned just five minutes in when Reidy was true from the penalty spot. It was the senior midfielder's second goal of the early season.
St. John's (1-0-1) then pushed forward at every attempt over the last 40 minutes. The Red Storm led for the game in corners 12-2 and in shots 20-6, although shots on goal were merely 6-4 in favor of St. John's.
The hosts finally found their equalizer with less than four minutes remaining in regulation when Williams connected on a one-timer, assisted by Andres Vargas.
Colgate managed a corner kick in the second overtime, but the Raiders concentrated on defending the overtime periods and escaping with an impressive draw.
Sunday night's match was the first meeting between these two programs since 1992. The series remains tied at 4-4-2.
Colgate returns to action Saturday, hosting Villanova in a 1 p.m. kickoff at Van Doren Field.
