HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Colgate men's soccer team gave up a late goal, but responded with
Mike Reidy scoring the overtime gamewinner 56 seconds into the extra period to give the Raiders a 3-2 victory over Binghamton on Friday night at Van Doren Field.
Colgate (1-0) got goals from Reidy,
Mike Garzi and
Tanner Schilling, while
Nick Arpey earned an assist on Schilling's tally.
Grant Reed got the start in net and made one save to earn the win in the season opener.
Binghamton (0-1) saw Tommy Klim and Jake Keegan score goals, while Logan Calvey relieved Chris Hayen in the first half and made five stops. Hayen had to leave due to an injury.
The Bearcats got on the board first on their third corner attempt of the first half. Adam Whitehead sent the ball into the box and Tommy Klim was able to fight past a Colgate defender and got his head on the ball for the goal in the 19th minute to get the early 1-0 lead.
Colgate answered back in the 43rd minute on a nice goal from Schilling.
Nick Arpey advanced the ball through the midfield and found Schilling just above the box. Schilling turned around and fired shot that hit the inside of the left post and into the net to tie the game at 1-1. Each team had three chances on corners and the Raiders had a 6-4 shot advantage.
The Raiders took their first lead of the match in the 67th minute with Garzi scoring on a free kick from outside the box. He took the shot from the left side and it deflected off a Bearcat defender and slipped past Hayen to give the Raiders a 2-1 lead on his first of the season.
Binghamton fought back to tie the game with under three minutes remaining in the contest. Jake Keegan was at the far post on a long throw in from the sidelines and the ball made it through traffic and onto his foot as he scored to tie the game at 2-2.
After losing the lead late in the game, the Raiders didn't waste anytime in making up for it as Reidy scored the gamewinner in the first minute of overtime. Reidy was coming down the left side of the goal mouth and was looking for a teammate on a cross, but the ball got redirected into the net by a Binghamton defender for the gamewinner. The Raiders came away with the 3-2 win in their season opener.
Colgate outshot the Bearcats, 16-8, in the game and had six corners to four for Binghamton.
The Raiders will be back in action this Sunday night as Colgate travels to St. John's for an 8 p.m. kick off.
