BOX SCORE
HAMILTON – Brittany Phillips scored her second and third goals of the season as the Colgate women's ice hockey team took Princeton into overtime Saturday afternoon at Starr Rink.
Colgate (2-7-1) saw two goals from Phillips and one from
Miriam Drubel.
Ashlynne Rando made 21 saves in the game.
Princeton (2-3-1) was led by Sally Butler who also notched two goals in the game. Denna Laing added with one goal as Kimberly Newell grabbed 22 saves.
The first period didn't feature much offense as the teams combined for 11 shots on goals, but on the 11th shot the Raiders broke through with Phillips scoring a power play goal with 14 seconds left in the frame.
Katie Case slipped a pass to
Jenna Klynstra at the left point. She fired a shot that Phillips tipped past Newell for the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
Phillips struck again on the power play, four minutes into the second frame, with assists to Case and Klynstra for the second time in the game. Klynstra took a shot from the right point that Phillips redirected past Newell. The senior skater had done a great job on both power play goals, getting in front of the net.
Princeton answered back with just under eight minutes left in the period when Denna Laing scored an unassisted goal. The Raiders lost the puck in the offensive zone and Laing picked it up at the blueline and skated the length of the ice and beat Rando's glove side to cut the Colgate advantage to 2-1.
The Tigers didn't waste anytime tying the score 31 seconds after the Laing goal with Sally Butler teaming up with Brianna Leahy on a 2-on-1 rush up ice. Leahy chipped the puck over a stick and to Butler, who placed it into the top of the net to tie the score at 2-2.
The Raiders regained the lead at 3-2 with
Miriam Drubel scoring shorthanded 49 seconds into the final frame. She teamed up with
Rachel Walsh on a rush up ice and beat Newell for the lead.
Butler answered back for the Tigers to tie the game for the second time with her second of the night, which came on the power play. The goal came unassisted as she intercepted a pass at the offensive blueline and skated in alone on Rando. Butler shot low and to the blocker side to make it 3-3 with just under 10 minutes left in the game.
After an overtime period both teams were unable to grab the winning goal. The Raiders face RIT Friday as they host the Tigers in a non-conference matchup at 7 p.m. at Starr Rink.
