Box Score
HAMILTON – Senior
Shane Conlin scored the lone goal for the Raider in Tuesday's 3-1 loss against #18 Cornell at Van Doren Field.
Colgate (3-5-5) saw its only goal by Conlin at the 80-minute mark.
Liam Stapleton made six saves in the game.
Cornell (11-0) was led by Daniel Haber who had a goal and an assist on the night. They also saw goals from Conor Goepel and Nico Nissl. Rick Pflasterer had three saves.
The end score didn't reflect how well the Raiders came out in the second half. Colgate competed for scoring opportunities with the Big Red, outshooting them nine to four in the last 45.
The Big Red however, would get on the board first with a goal by Conor Goepel just 20 minutes into the game. He received the ball from Stephen Reisert 10 yards out from the net and shot a ball that just flew over Stapleton's head.
Colgate would try to answer with a break away opportunity from Conlin.
Mike Reidy played a great ball down the side of the field for Conlin to run onto. He took a few touches toward net before trying his luck at goal. Cornell's Pflasterer came up with the diving save to keep them up 1-0.
Conlin made a great run behind the defense after
Nick Rizzo sent a long ball into space. He was able to cut the ball back and play it to the backside of the box where Reidy was waiting. Reidy blasted a header at net but Pflasterer pushed it over the net and out for a corner.
Early into the second half Reidy got the Raiders off to a quick start by dribbling the ball down the sideline. He saw an opening and took a shot that sailed just wide.
Colgate had another scoring chance after Reidy played the ball into
Tanner Schilling, who was at the top of the 18-yard box. Unfortunately Schilling couldn't get his right foot wrapped around it and the ball sailed past him.
The Big Red had their own breakaway after Haber made a run in behind the Colgate defense. Stapleton cut his angle and forced him to shoot wide.
Cornell extended its lead to 2-0 in the 79th minute after the ball took an unlucky bounce over a Colgate defender right to the foot of Haber. He cut the ball back and before the Raiders could get their foot out to block the shot, Haber placed the ball near post sliding it past Stapleton.
Less than a minute later, Colgate cut the lead in half off an unassisted goal by Conlin. He intercepted the ball at the top of the Cornell 18-yard box and took one touch before firing at net. The ball hit the far left post and rolled into the goal, making the score 2-1 with twenty minutes left in the match.
In those last twenty minutes Colgate would keep Cornell on its toes, by pressuring the back four with the speed of Reidy and the ball skills of Conlin. However the Raiders weren't able to rally enough to equalize and conceded one last goal with less than 30 seconds left.
Colgate will be back on the field this Saturday when they travel to West Point, N.Y. to take on Army. The Raiders will look to grab their second Patriot League win in the matchup with the Black Knights.
