HAMILTON – In a game of blocked shots, the Colgate men's soccer team saw a penalty kick goal from Mike Reidy to force a 1-1 tie against Holy Cross Saturday afternoon at Van Doren Field.

Colgate (3-4-5) was led by Reidy who scored on a penalty kick mid-way through the first half. Shane Conlin also added four shots in the match. Liam Stapleton notched three saves.

"We did not play well or compete at a particularly high level today,” head coach Erik Ronning said. “I clearly did not pepare the team well. Give Holy Cross credit...they played very well."

Holy Cross (2-7-1) saw a goal by Josh Cintas. Kevin Wright made eight saves on the afternoon.

In a very exciting first half, Colgate had the better of the scoring opportunities starting in the fourth minute. Tanner Schilling played the ball into Mike Garzi who took a shot at net. Dane Kenny made the sliding block to save the goal.

Holy Cross had their first opportunity off a corner kick by Pat McCann. He placed the ball at the top of the 18-yard box where Monty Sanders tried volleying it out of the air. Patrick Letourneau came up with the big block for the Raiders keeping the game scoreless.

Conlin had a break away off a giveaway by Cintas deep in the Crusader box. Being that he was so close to the touchline he was unable to get a great shot off but earned himself a corner kick. The Raiders would score off the corner kick from a header by Letourneau however it would be called back due to a foul on Colgate.

Holy Cross's Will Bowers would give the ball away to Grazi who would create another breakaway for Conlin. He took a few touches before looking to play the ball over to Reidy who was trailing on the left side of the field. The ball was grabbed away by Wright before it got to him.

The Crusaders would be first to get on the board from a mid-air strike by Cintas. The play started off a chip by Andrew Rhodes who played the ball over the Colgate defense for Cintas to run onto. The ball took one bounce before Cintas volleyed it out of the air and into the far side of the net. The goal gave Holy Cross the 1-0 lead 20 minutes into the game.

Off a Colgate free kick, one of the Raiders players would get fouled in the box, awarding them a penalty kick. Reidy would score the equalizing goal with a laser of the kick to the right hand corner of the net. The goal earned Reidy his sixth goal of the season with less than 11 minutes to go in the half.

Letourneau made action happen when he moved forward with the ball out of the defense. He found Conlin who made a great turn with the ball and dribbled into the center of the box. At the last second the ball was kicked away from Conlin to Reidy who couldn't put it away with ten minutes to go in the game.

A turn over at midfield by Colgate created a scoring chance for the Crusaders. They played a long ball to Eddie Viscount who was wide on the wing. He took a shot at the top of the 18-yard box over the head of Stapleton. Luckily for the Raiders the ball hit the crossbar saving the go ahead goal.

Late into the half a free kick was awarded to Colgate. The ball landed at foot of Reidy, who fired a shot five yards out. Holy Cross came up with the block on the goal line by their captain McCann.

Neither team was able to grab a second half goal forcing Colgate's fifth overtime game this season.

OVERTIME PERIODS

In the first overtime period a long ball from Holy Cross' Cintas started an attack for the Crusaders. Cintas played the ball to Sanders who had his shot blocked by Evan Heroux and out for a corner.

The Raiders would grab four more scoring opportunities throughout the two overtimes. Schilling and Dan Matthews put a few passes together inside the Crusader box before finding Nick Arpey who took a strike at goal. Wright deflected it over the net for a corner kick. Another opportunity came off a Conlin fast break. He was able to outrun the Holy Cross defender and take a shot at net. Wright once again came up big making the kick save.

Reidy found himself on a fast break deep the Crusaders half. He saw Matthews who was next to him making a parallel run. Matthews one touched the ball but the keeper deflected it back to Reidy who couldn't keep his foot down enough and shot high.

In what was the last scoring opportunity of the game, Arpey played a long ball to Schilling. He dribbled to the touchline and played the ball back to a diving Arpey, who continued his run. The ball sailed just wide, ending the game tied at 1-1.
