HAMILTON – Tyler Forbes earned his first and second collegiate goals as the Colgate men's soccer team tied Lafayette 2-2 Saturday afternoon at Van Doren Field.
Colgate (4-6-6) was led by Forbes who notched two goals on three shots on goal.
Mike Reidy had seven shots while
Barrett Metzger added two. Senior
Grant Reed made the start in net for the Raiders grabbing four saves in the match.
"For larges streches of the game, we had terrific attacking rhythm and played with energy and enthusiasm," head coach
Erik Ronning said. "However, we did not come to start either half well and payed the price. I must do a better job of preparing them. The good news is we are continuing to get better every day, and we will be ready for a very strong Bucknell team on Saturday."
The Leopards (6-7-3) were led by Kyle Scharfenberg and Brandon Turner who both had one goal in the game. Nathan McDonald made three saves.
Lafayette came out to a quick start grabbing the early lead just 2:23 minutes into the game. Nate Arronson took a free kick after Colgate fouled the Leopards at the top of the 18-yard box. His shot was blocked by
Patrick Letourneau but Scharfenberg was able to put the ball away off the rebound, giving them the 1-0 lead.
Colgate answered 15 minutes later after the quick paced Reidy blew past the Leopard defense on the left side of the field with the ball. He dribbled to the end line and played a great ball into the middle of the box. Forbes beat the defender to the near post and one touched the ball around McDonald who was coming out, tying the game at one a piece.
After the Colgate goal, the Raiders were able to keep high pressure on the Leopards back four. They earned themselves a few more scoring opportunities before finally taking the lead late into the half. Reidy once again utilized his speed dribbling the ball into the middle of the field, crossing it into the 18. Forbes found the high cross and headed it into the corner of the net. The ball took a deflection off a Leopards player but still went into the goal, lifting the Raiders to a 2-1 lead.
Ten minutes into the second half
Tanner Schilling took the ball down the sideline. He crossed the ball to Forbes who took a hard shot on net but the goalie was able to come up with the save.
James Byer was trailing on the opposite side of the field but couldn't get to the rebound before McDonald grabbed it.
It was Lafayette this time that tied the game up in the 56th minute. The Leopards converted on a long throw in opportunity. The ball bounced around in the box finding the head of Turner, who played it over Reed's head.
The Raiders earned a great scoring opportunity after Forbes played a long ball over to Reidy on the opposite side of the field. He beat the defender and shot at the top of the 18. McDonald came up with a huge save for the Leopards, stopping the go ahead goal.
Deep into the Lafayette half, Metzger took a strong throw in creating another chance at net.
Evan Heroux tried to one touch it out of the air but unfortunately the ball sailed just wide.
A minute later Lafayette had its own opportunity after the ball was played into a wide-open Sean Peckham on the backside of the net. He shot the ball low enough for Heroux to come sliding in to make the block.
Colgate had its last scoring chance of regulation with one minute to play.
Nick Arpey sent a long ball into Byer who one touched it off to Schilling. He played a soft chip onto the head of Metzger whose shot went barely over the top of the net.
OVERTIME
Colgate dominated the scoring chances in the two overtime periods, starting in the first OT with a wall pass between Byer and
Mike Garzi. After Byer received the ball back from Garzi he played it over to Schilling who tried is luck at net. The ball was blocked by a Leopard defender but gave Colgate the momentum early into the first overtime.
Another opportunity came when Metzger sent a long ball into Byer who was wide on the side of the field. He took a few touches before playing the ball deep into the box. Reidy was able to get his head on it but couldn't redirect it enough and hit it into the side of the net.
Lafayette had a chance in the first overtime after Alec Golini took a wide open shot at the top of the 18. Reed got a full hand on the ball and pushed it away for a corner kick, saving the winning goal.
Throughout the second overtime, Colgate had two great opportunities at net. Byer made a move to beat the Leopard defender but got fouled 30 yards out from the goal, earning a free kick. Reidy stepped up to take the kick angling the ball just enough that it almost dropped in the net over the goalies head. The ball eventually skid off the crossbar and out for a goal kick.
The final opportunity came from a Schilling's cross. He sent the ball over the 18-yard box to Arpey who was trailing backside. He one touched it into Reidy who tried to put it away for the win, however McDonald came off his line and grabbed the ball before he could get a shot off.
The game would end tied forcing Colgate's sixth tie of the season and third in Patriot League play. The Raiders will be back in action on Oct. 27 when they travel to Bucknell to take on the Bison at 4 p.m.
