ONEONTA, N.Y. – Skilled ball possession and great teamwork secured the win Tuesday night as the Colgate men's soccer team defeated Hartwick, 2-1.
Colgate (3-4-4) saw goals from
Mike Reidy and
Evan Heroux. This was Reidy's fifth goal of the season and Heroux's second.
Liam Stapleton had three saves on the night.
Hartwick (3-4-2) was led by Jason Keefe, who notched a goal in the match. Mateo Munarriz saw eight shots and made three saves.
Midway through the first half Reidy's one-touch volley into the back of the net put Colgate up 1-0. The goal was courtesy
Shane Conlin, who made a great run down the side of the field after stripping the ball away from a Hartwick defender.
Colgate had most of the opportunities in the first half, beginning in the fifth minute with a long run by Reidy. He played a flat ball into the box for Conlin, but a defender was able to slide in and kick it out for a corner kick.
The Raiders earned another scoring opportunity in the 35th minute. Reidy tried his luck once again at net from about 20 yards out but the ball sailed just wide.
Hartwick had its best chance of the first half with less than five minutes to play. Tyler Bailey took a corner kick that landed right at the foot of Keefe. He was able to get a shot off in the box, but a Raider defender blocked it. Marc Russell came up with the deflected ball and took another shot at goal. Stapleton, who had fallen to the ground to make the save on the previous deflected ball, was able to come up with the save.
The Hawks came out fast in the second half, pressuring the Raider defensive. They earned themselves a set piece at midfield and played a long ball into Keefe, who took one touch before taking a shot eight yards out. Stapleton came up with a huge block and was able to push it away for a corner.
The Raiders would extend their lead in the 70th minute off a header by Heroux. He saw the goalie off his line and was able to head the ball over him and into the back of the net from the top of the 18-yard box. The goal was his second goal in two games and gave Colgate the 2-0 lead.
Colgate would get one more opportunity at net off a free kick by Stapleton. After the kick,
Patrick Letourneau angled himself just enough to flick the ball over his shoulder at net. Munarriz came up with the save.
Hartwick cut the lead in half with only four minutes to play in the game. Russell Oost-Lievense played a ball into the box, where Keefe was able to barely get a touch on the ball. His re-direction went right to the bottom left post and Stapleton was unable to come up with the save.
The Raiders then maintained ball possession in the last couple minutes to secure the lead and the win.
Colgate returns to the pitch Saturday, taking on the Crusaders of Holy Cross at Van Doren Field at 4 p.m.
