COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Raiders' defense had a dominating performance against No. 1 Maryland, Tuesday night at Ludwig Field in their 2-0 defeat.
Colgate held the Terps goalless for 60 minutes before conceding a goal off a free kick. Maryland would tack on a second goal late in the game off a scramble in front of the net with five minutes left.
Colgate (4-6-5) was led by
Evan Heroux who notched one shot in the game and was a strong player for the Colgate defense, blocking three shots.
Liam Stapleton made five saves pushing his season total to 30.

Erik Ronning said. “We battled hard and represented Colgate proudly against the best team in the country. Experiences like this will help us in the critical games we have remaining. Our focus now turns to Lafayette.”
#1 Maryland (12-0-1) saw goals from Tshuma Schillo and Patrick Mullins. Jordan Tatum had one save.
The Raiders kept the Terps scoreless in the first half, earning their fair share of scoring opportunities.
Eight minutes into the half, there was a scramble in front of the Maryland net. Colgate had a few chances to put it away but couldn't convert. The ball finally landed on the foot of Heroux, whose shot went just wide.
Maryland counterattacked with their own scoring chance but the Colgate defense held strong and pressured the attacking players not letting them get a shot off.
Colgate thought they took the lead in the 15th minute after they tapped the ball into the back of the net off a header, however the Raiders were called offsides on the play.
Stapleton, who notched another start in net for the Raiders, came up big off a hard driven shot by Jake Pace. He dove and grabbed the ball, making the save.
Late into the half, Maryland had two more chances to take the lead but both missed the net, ending the half 0-0.
Just two minutes into the second half, Colgate's defense came up strong yet again after Schillo made a move past Stapleton.
Wade Martin came sliding in to save the go ahead goal.
In a matter of two minutes Stapleton made two big saves for the Raiders. One coming off a shot by John Stertzer and the other on a shot by Mullins from 10 yards out.
The Terps would grab the go ahead goal in the 61st minute off a header by Schillo at the far post. The goal came from a Mullins free kick. He bent the ball around the Colgate defensive wall where Schillo found it just three yards out, giving them the 1-0 lead.
Colgate had a chance to equalize after Stapleton launched a free kick into the box from midfield. A sliding Maryland player blocked the shot, saving the tying goal.
In the 72nd minute,
Nick Rizzo forced Tatum to make a diving save off his right-footed shot to the left hand corner of the net.
With five minutes left in the game, Colgate blocked a shot conceding a corner kick. The ball was played into a mixture of players, and found the foot of Stertzer. Colgate was unable to clear the ball out and he played the ball to Mullins who put it in the back of the net from five yards out.
The game would end with the Terps taking the 2-0 win. The Raiders will be back in action Saturday for senior day when they host Lafayette at Van Doren Field at 4 p.m. The team will also be dedicating the game to the fight against Ovarian Cancer. They will be wearing teal jerseys in support of the fight.
