ITHACA, N.Y. (01/10/12) – The Colgate women's hockey team experienced a 3-0 setback on Tuesday night when it fell to No. 3/3 Cornell at James Lynah Rink in Ithaca, N.Y.
The Raiders could not recover from a two-goal deficit in the first period, which Cornell then extended to three goals in the third period to eventually secure its ninth league win. The Big Red had a 42-15 shooting advantage in the game.
Cornell came out to a strong start in the first period, controlling almost all the offense in the opening 20 minutes of play as it outshot Colgate (8-12-1, 3-6-1 ECAC Hockey) 15-4. Despite earning a power play opportunity at the 8:40 mark, the Raiders were only able to generate two shots, both of which were blocked by the defense. The two-minute disadvantage did not faze the Big Red, which responded with a goal from Rebecca Johnston 47 seconds after returning to full strength to take a 1-0 lead at the 11:27 mark. A series of Colgate penalties minutes later then led to a 5-on-3 advantage for Cornell. The Big Red capitalized on the power play opportunity with a second tally from Johnston at the 15:58 mark to increase its lead to two goals going into the second frame.
The Raiders had a much stronger showing in the second period, creating some scoring opportunities as it began to find its shooting momentum. Colgate then found itself with a 5-on-3 advantage of its own midway through the frame, allowing it to take a series of shots on net but could not get past goalie Lauren Slebodnick. Both teams continued to play a physical game as the clock wound down but, at the end of the second period, neither team was able to find the back of the net. Cornell held a slight 12-10 shooting advantage in the second 20 minutes of play.
The final period began much like the second with both teams battling it out on the ice in search of an early goal. The Raiders came close to getting on the scoreboard after a series of power play opportunities but it was Cornell that was able to net a third goal at a 14:14 mark to eventually win the game 3-0.
