VILLANOVA, Pa. (9/4/11) – The Colgate men's soccer team continued its unbeaten streak on Sunday afternoon when it tied with Villanova 1-1 in its second double overtime game of the season.
Despite scoring a goal early in the second half to take the 1-0 lead, the Raiders conceded their first goal of the season in the final minutes of the game, sending it into overtime. Senior co-captain,
Steven Miller, scored the team's only goal of the game.
Both teams came out looking for a goal in the first half with Colgate (2-0-1) attacking the Wildcats' net first with a pair of shots from junior
Mike Garzi. As the half progressed, the game evened out with both teams testing the goalkeepers in an attempt to get on the scoreboard first. However, despite the numerous scoring opportunities on both ends of the pitch, the game remained scoreless at half time.
In the second half, it was the Raiders that came out with the offensive surge, outshooting Villanova 5-0 in the first 15 minutes of the game. Their hard work was rewarded at the 59:56 mark when Miller headed the ball into the back of the net off of a corner kick from Garzi to give his team the 1-0 lead. After the goal, Colgate continued to put pressure of the Wildcats' net as Villanova attempted to settle down and find its offensive rhythm. Both teams continued to played hard through the rest of the half but then as the game came to a close, the Wildcats were able to generate some offense with a series of shots that led to an equalizer at the 86:44 mark to tie the game at 1-1 and force it into overtime.
The first overtime period was not as offensively driven as regulation time, with both teams failing to really generate their offense. Only one shot was taken in the ten minutes, which was by Villanova. In the second period both teams picked up the pace as they attacked more aggressively but despite their best efforts, neither team could find the game-winning goal, resulting in a 1-1 double overtime tie.
Junior goalkeeper
Grant Reed had four saves for the Raiders while Villanova's John Fogart had seven.
"We more than held our own against a very strong Villanova team," stated head coach
Erik Ronning. "We played good soccer and battled defensively. What is encouraging is that we are getting better every game. We have some tough games ahead of us and must now recover physically and get ready for a very strong Vermont team."
Colgate will resume play next weekend when it travels to Burlington, Vt. to compete in its first tournament of the season. The Raiders will face Vermont on Friday, Sept. 9 before taking on New Hampshire on Sunday, Sept. 11.
