BOX SCORE

WASHINGTON, D.C. (9/24/11) –
Sophomore Lindsay Young had another double-double, including 20 kills, but it wasn't enough against American as the Colgate women's volleyball team dropped their first Patriot League match on Saturday by a 3-1 (22-25, 25-16, 25-21, 25-17) score.

Colgate (4-10, 1-1 PL) got Young's 20 kills and 12 digs, while Mari Faines had seven kills of her own. Kaylee Fifer had 41 assists for the third-straight match and Caitlin Cremin posted 17 digs in the loss.

American (8-9, 2-0 PL) had four players reach double digits in kills with Juliana Crum striking for 15 kills and Morgan Hendrix tallying 14. Alexandra Hammer had 35 assists, while Crum also led the team in digs with 14.

In the opening set, the teams played even until the Eagles took an 11-8 lead on a Crum kill and an assisted block by Kelly McCaddin and Hendrix. Colgate fired back to tie the set at 13-13 after kills from Young and Faines. The teams then shifted back to the back-and-forth mode until an American error and a kill by Young gave the Raiders an 18-16 lead. Colgate increased the advantage up to 21-18 on a Cremin service ace and a pair of Young kills. American cut the lead to one at 23-22, but strikes from Young and Diane Seely gave the Raiders a one-set advantage with a 25-22 win. Young finished the set with seven of Colgate's 17 kills.

"I was really pleased with our intensity and focus in the first set," said head coach Ryan Baker. "We need to learn how to sustain that."

The second set was all American as the Eagles jumped out to a 12-3 lead. Colgate answered with a 7-1 run to cut it to 13-10, highlighted by two kills from Seely and many errors from the Eagles. American was able to turn it on again and opened up an 18-11 lead. Colgate never recovered from the second Eagle run and dropped the set by a 25-16 score.

With the teams tied at 1-1, American took control with a win in the third set. The Eagles started with a 10-5 lead. The Raiders got the lead down to two at 19-17 after an assisted block from Kaylee Dougherty and Mari Faines, but that two-point deficit was the closest Colgate got. American increased the lead to 23-18 and after Kenzie Hume and Young added kills to try for a come back, the Eagles won the set on a Colgate error to go up 2-1 with a 25-21 win in the third set.

The fourth set was almost a mirror image of the third as American got out to an early lead at 10-6. Colgate fought back to tie with at 13-13 with kills from Hume, Young and Blaire Safir. The Eagles answered with a short 3-0 run to put the lead up to 16-13. Colgate got back in the set thanks to a Young kill and multiple service errors, but it was too late as American closed out the match with a 25-17 win.

Colgate will be back at Cotterell Court next weekend for its Dig Pink weekend against Lehigh on Friday night and Lafayette on Saturday afternoon.
