HAMILTON, N.Y. (4/9/11) – The Colgate softball team hit four home runs to sweep Bucknell on Saturday at Eaton Street Field. The Raiders hit two in the first game (3-2) and followed with two more in the second game (5-2) to stay unbeaten in Patriot League play.
In the first game, Colgate (15-12, 6-0) scored all three of its runs in the first inning off a two-run homer by
Tera Vaughn and a solo shot from
Stephanie Hartquist to build the 3-0 lead. The Bison answered back in the second inning with a two run homer from Elyse Colmenero to make the score 3-2. Both pitchers then took over as
Rachel LeCoq matched her career-high with 12 strikeouts in seven innings to grab her 10th win of the season, while Alex MacLean also looked good for the Bison only giving up four hits in six innings of action.
In the second game, the Raiders scored in the fourth inning off a three run blast from Hartquist and added two more in the sixth inning off a homer by
Emmie Dolfi to grab its sixth-straight win in Patriot League play.
Bucknell (8-24, 1-5) took advantage of a fielding error by the Raiders in the fifth inning to score its first run and then loaded the bases with nobody out in the sixth inning. After two singles and a walk, Kathryn Wilkinson was able to bring home Mallory Lyons from third with a single up the middle to make the score 3-2, still with no outs. The next hitter lined into a double play as
Haley Fleming threw a dart from right field to catch Wilkinson off first and Meredith Dickson flew out to centerfield to end the rally.
Courtney O'Connell pitched seven strong innings allowing five hits and one earned run while striking out two to claim her fifth win of the season. Hartquist finished day the hitting 3-for-6 with two homers and four RBI, while Vaughn went 3-for-6 with one homer and two RBI.
Colgate only surrendered two earned runs on the day and has started 6-0 in Patriot League play for the first time since the 2007 season.
Colgate will be back in action tomorrow (Sunday, April 10) to conclude the weekend series with Bucknell. The first game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. at Eaton Street Field.
