Game Two

WORCESTER, Mass. (4/25/11)
– Junior shortstop Jennifer Ortega drove in five runs as the Raiders split with Holy Cross on Monday. Colgate won the first game 8-4, before dropping the nightcap to the Crusaders 10-7 at Freshman Field.

In the first game, Colgate (22-18, 13-2) was led by Ortega who went 2-for-3 with one home run and five RBI, while Tera Vaughn drove in two. The Raiders scored the first four runs of the game with one in the second inning and three more in the third off a three-run blast from Ortega. Holy Cross responded with three runs in the top of the fourth inning to make the score 4-3. But Colgate answered back with four runs in the bottom half of the inning off a pair of two-run singles from Ortega and Vaughn to put the score out of reach.

Freshman Rachel LeCoq pitched her 14th complete game of the season giving up two earned runs off eight hits while striking out seven.

In the nightcap, Holy Cross (16-23, 9-7) built a 7-0 lead through the first three innings of action and was able to survive a late Raiders rally to clinch its first Patriot League Tournament berth since 2003. The Crusaders were led by Fregenti who hit 3-for-3 with five RBI, including a three run homer in the first inning.

Colgate scored five runs in the sixth inning off three hits and two Holy Cross errors to make the score 8-6, but the Crusaders responded with two insurance runs in the seventh to secure the win. Stephanie Hartquist led the Raiders going 3-for-4 with one homer and two runs scored, while Vaughn finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Colgate will be back in action this weekend as it hosts Lafayette for a four game set. The first game is scheduled to begin on Saturday at 12 p.m. at Eaton Street Field.

GAME NOTES: Rachel LeCoq has the fourth best single season strikeout total in school history with 129 (freshman record was 79) … LeCoq is also the sixth pitcher in school history to record 14 or more wins in a season … Tera Vaughn has 33 RBI on the season and needs one more to tie the Colgate freshman record … Jennifer Ortega scored the 100th run of her career in the first game to become the fifth player in the school history to do that.
